Happiness is a package in my mail from a CPFer. When it's return address is our Charlie "Mr.Bulk" Wong (or some of you fellahs), it becomes joyful anticipation.
I was down at the Ranch on Saturday hunting wild dogs (Bagged: Zero) so when I got back on Sunday I found a priority mail box with this awesome Mag-mod inside.
It is a brand new Mag 3xD cell in that handsome silver finish. It has a Luxeon III LED mounted to an industrial sized heatsink which is Direct Driven by the three D cells.
The lens has the very mild Acrylite (I don't know if I have that spelled right) coating to smooth out the shiny, stock reflector's artifacts. It does this extremely well with what must be only a modest diminishment of output.
I have one of Oto's Perfect Mag Reflectors (cammed orange peel) on order and look forward to trying it with one of the UCL lenses from Flashlightlens.com /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Mag makes beautiful hosts and I am particularly fond of the 3D. I kept a Mag 3D I bought in the early 1980s in my truck for a decade. Three years ago I destroyed it defending myself against a couple of road ragers who sideswiped me on an Interstate access road and blamed me for it.
They graduated from punks to knotheads, but all I had left was the dented empty tube and tailcap. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I replaced it, but then, alas, I discovered CPF. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowlaugh.gif
Being an ape concerning technology, I can't say much about the innards of this mod. It is Direct Drive and uses a Luxeon III ("3 Watt") emitter that is very white. I don't know the bin, and it doesn't really matter to me. Whatever the bin, it is white and intensely bright like I want 'em to be. Every Luxeon modded head or flashlight I have bought from a CPF modder has been very white and very bright. Binning codes are wasted on this igner'nt, hairy-legged, old country boy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I hope to send it off to Roy for plotting the output/runtime in a couple of days.
It arrived in the host's original packaging inside the box, which is a thoughtful and nice touch. I saved the packaging 'cause it has Charlie's fingerprints on it and will be a valuable collector's item when he and I are worm food. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
The workmanship is impeccable...flawless. There is no way this is going to be used as a "Knob-Scobber".
I'll post some photos I took just a little while ago. It was daylight, high noon actually, on a clear, sunny day in South Texas. I took one shot outdoors, the light setting was cranked down to its lowest (- 1.5) and you can see it looks like nightime. My veteran Sony Mavica's overexposure protection kicked in, too. I thought it gave a nice look at the powered up emitter. However, when I attempted to look at it with my nekkid eyeballs I howled that good old Germanic, single syllable expletive and staggered around the balcony much to the amusement of my three Lesbian coed
neighbors.
Edit: The counter top is formica painted dark "Battleship Grey" and the wall is indeed just about that color, I call it "Tobaccy & Bacon Grease Stained Gubmint White". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif
Here's a beamshot of the Mr. Bulk DD3DIII at a light setting of "-.5" :
Here beamspots are compared between the Pelican M6 Incandescent (on the left) and the Mr. Bulk DD3DIII (on the right). Light setting is "0" :
The reflections mar the photo, but you can see that the DD3DIII's LED output compares favorably with the Pelican M6's 70 something Lumen ( /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif ) intense spot.
Charlie, please correct me if I've erred in my description. Thanks so much for showing me how much light a Luxeon III can put out.
When the Runtime Plot is completed a link will be posted.
Oh, no rechargables for this darlin' /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif. All this performance out of inexpensive Walgreen's alkalines. This is driven at the bleeding edge for the Luxeon III in this configuration.
