Who uses Mr16 irc halogen and in what setup ? I think I'm going for dual 20w 8' Irc bulbs, both run at 15v. Both together is maybe 50-60 watts power consuption, 1800+ lumens, so half the efficiency of Trail Tech Mr16 Hid?

For those who are interested in this set up, there are plenty Mr16's available for those without the ability to make their own. Trail tech mr 16 Torch Halogen is the dear option as I see it, $40 for single light on ebay, and Optronics' cheapest model is set of 2 plastic mr16's for $15(searchGOLF CART FOG EZ GO DRIVING LIGHTS on US ebay.) There are plenty of compatible mounts, such as the mount for electron 310/315 at £3. There are fork mounts at sjscycles that look compatible. Also home-made units on ebay including mount, switch and bulb, around £20-£30, Uk seller, many satisfied customers.

Any interest for a group order to cut shipping costs? The cost of shipping from US to the Uk is usually $30 first item, $8 further items. Too late for me, I have already bought the cheapo Optronics. (I have a spare pair I might sell if anyone is interested.)

EDIT * Sorry, I have just realised an obvious fault in the idea of a group order. All the lights would be sent to one address, there would be further postage costs in the UK to send the lights to the various addresses of whoever wanted them.

Alright, I see I was repeating much of what had been said in a post a few months ago. Still, Mr16 driving lights which require no modding may be an attractive option for someone out there?

nice one, it looks quite mean. I suppose there is a satisfaction in doing a complete diy project. Are you familiar with IRC bulbs, philips masterline ES ect? I don't suppose you need them. At 12v they use around 40% less power for the same output, or for the same power are about 65% brighter, again I assume I'm repeating what most of you know.

You say of your battery '...it gets me home...' so I guess that like mine, yours it is a commuting setup. I think 8degree or 12degree is best, and two lights at different heights seem to perform better than two side by side. As foe power supply, I never investigated SLA batteries. You carry it in a rear pannier? I think i'll go for li-ion, either 3s3p 18650's or a 11.1v 8000mah lipo. It is less out of consideration for weight but the nimh water bottle batteries I was planning to use can't cope with anything over 20w, and then I already have the 'Mystery' 5A lipo charger. Battery goes to my dc-dc converter, a (12v input) Maplins 150w Laptop car adapter, which supplies 15v to the lamp. Heavy, no doubt inneficient, can't be dimmed, no idea how reliable the cheap components will prove, but it. Is. Bright.

Hit4six, I know nothing of philips masterline ES etc, but Ive just become very interested in them (65% brighter) :naughty: Im becoming increasingly addicted to this site and owning the brightest light ever to be fitted to a bike. The SLA battery wieght is a small price to pay, in more ways than one:laughing:

Are these these the bulbs http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PHILIPS-MASTE...photoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

Forgive me if this is a daft question (i am new) but will the 50w philips bulb be brighter than my standared 50w bulb ?

It is so nice to make friends.

My sign off is not entirely serious. I am a long time reader of CPF and have learnt a lot here. About Q5 bins, about barnburners, about life.

You'll find the IRC threads I read if you search 'Destructive Incan Testing'. You are looking for the Osram IRC bulbs. These are not Mr16's but having a life of 4000hrs are comparable as far as I can tell.

I don't have the knowledge to say whether it is reflector or bulb but my Irc bulbs appear to have less blue output than other Mr16's. It is not yellower as such, it just doesn't have the same crispness. Sorry if this doesn't make sense, you will have to try it for yourself.

To see what my lights are like for oncoming traffic I've leant my bike on a lamppost and stood back to compare my 30w Irc 8dgre at 12v with car head light beams. It seemed fine. (I expect to post pics in future, also rear.) On the same ride I saw a motorbike coming towards me which clearly had an off road light. It wasn't powerful enough or blue enough to be a real mnenace but it was still 10 times more dazzling than Mercedes Hid.

Aye, the box on the 50w will say something like 'replace your 75w bulb with a 50w bulb.' So it will be 50w power consumption, equivalent 75w output.

We are going in opposite directions. If I use the route I just tested, I expect 2*20w@15v will be too bright. I've wired up the lights I mention but haven't got a case for my batteries so no road test yet.

Aye right I'll pick one of the 75w philips bulbs up and give it a go.

Cheers for ya help

.........might even put up a beam shot:huh:
