We (myself and another very reputable CPF member who has asked to remain on the background for now) are only a short time away from bringing this light to CPF members. Initial run of 30-100 lights with bulb options to include the Osram 62138, 64623, and 64625 among others.

The electical package has been proofed and proven.

Now for a few feelers.

The Mule prototype has been posted for your perusal.

This is a proto using the triagular 3x4 stack of 5/4A batteries. It is almost exactly the length of the 3D mag, while being exactly 2/10 of an inch larger in diameter. Most people don't notice it is larger unless they have just held a D mag.

However, we can also make this light with a 4x3 square pack of the same batteries. This would make the light only 8 inches in length, while increasing the diameter roughly another 2/10 of an inch. I am 6'3", and this increase, while noticeable, is still tolerable.

We would, however, like your thoughts about this size difference before we proceed.

To answer a few easy questions.

1) Probable type III anodizing.
2) Initial lights will have a 3 inch head and reflector designed by another well known CPFer.
3) There MAY (note emphasis on MAY) be a stealth head the size of a mag head. This will be order dependant.
4) Ergonomics will be very Mag like, and parts for repair, if necessary, will be readily available. (We don't anticipate the need for repairs, but with limited runs, we feel it important to at least think about it!)
5) These lights are on the cutting edge of handheld lights, while fun to play with, they are definitely NOT toys. They burn EXTREMELY hot in front of the light, and are not designed for use by young children, (or older irresponsible children for that matter). As one of my Beta testers said, "This is the light you want to take to a deserted island, because before the battery burns out, you could have gotten your fire started!" My 3 Beta testers have all ordered lights!!

Long- 8
Short- 11
Either- 6

Cool! The light sounds awesome! Will this light be focusable? Approximately how much will it cost?

As for my input on the body size, I think stay with the 3x4 pack. A 45mm body might be a bit too big for some.

Also, you mean 4/5A cells, not 5/4A, right?
 
I'm in for a turnkey.

I would vote for whatever makes the brighest light.
 
I'd be interested in either. I've got big hands, but there's something to be said for length.
 
I would be in for a turnkey. The shorter 8 in length preferred. How will the 8 in thickness compare to that of a Tigerlight? The tigerlight is 8 inches long so that may be a good comparision to use.

I am also in for the 3 in head and later, if available, the stealth head.

I don't own a Tigerlight, but I believe them to be 1 5/8" or 1.625". so the 1.85" to 1.9" would be 2-3/10ths bigger in diameter.

Run times will be in the 10-30 minute range, depending on the bulb used and the quality of the battery. We are still working on the battery supplier side, thats about the final issue, along with whether we provide a charger with each light, to be decided.

Sounds perfect. Now how much is it realistically going to cost?? When will we see the first ones roll off the production line...?? I see you are realisitic about the number of potential takers.

I assume the CG340 NiMH charger can charge this thing up. If you guys can get a bulk deal of chargers then WHOOPIE, but make sure what you supply can run off either 12VDC OR 120/230v as some of us CPFers work at 50Hz!!

I think that anodised with the square battery profile you mention sounds good, shorter is better. Stealth head probably not needed as the 3" head will look in proportion with the slightly larger diamter tube.

64625 it is then!! Runtime and throw details please!!

From what I've seen of this light (thanks Bill), it looks set to be the be-all-end-all big gun light. To those of us familar with the Doom franchise, this is the BFG. Big... I leave the rest to the imagination /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Older irresponsible children? Who's calling my name? I think I'd have to be extremely irresponsible with the wallet to afford this to begin with /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/broke.gif (I'd probably have to sell MYSELF to pay off the loan, heh..)

Still, it is awesome to see this light reach production status. It's like the mythical Beast.. except that it's available TK. My congratulations to the development team. It couldn't have been easy.

What are you using for a socket? It's ceramic, right, and doesn't melt no matter what, right?

Also, this is direct drive, unregulated, right?

What's the runtime with the 138?

Also, I will be able to use my Osram 64440 IRC in this platform, yes?

It will depend upon price, though. I've got a fair chunk of my flashlight play money tied up in a project right now, so unless I want to get my wife on the war path, I'd better restrain myself.

Oh, and HA is a priority for me, BTW. I hate type II anodizing and would choose bare aluminum over type II.

This is outstanding. I'm glad to see that someone has stepped up and is filling the need stirred up by the ill-fated Aurora TK. IMO, you've done it better than my modest little prototype could have.

Just a point of clarification for PeterW...I found that the 64625 was quite iffy on a fresh 11-cell pack. Unless a second resistored warm-up circuit is brought into play, the 64625 almost certainly would not survive a fresh 12-cell pack.

What's the work from bwaites on the 64625. If you want max light you'll need to use it or give a lesser bulb a decent boost. What you planning?? Would a custom 11cell pack be possible or are you guys boosting other bulbs so we don't need to worry??

Lets see if I can answer these as we go!

Cost is still being worked on. Less than $400.00 US, and we are planning for substantially less, all the costs are pretty well fixed except battery cost and body cost, the anno and charger issues are still being worked out as well. If it sounds like I'm hedging, I am. The number of orders will have a HUGE impact on cost and until we can get a grasp on those numbers, a better figure is impossible.

Runtime target is 20-30 minutes, but this will be bulb dependent, of course.

The 3" reflector mod will substantially increase throw, somewhere along the lines of a 3 million candlepower spotlight, My proto still has a 2 inch head.

Running the 64625 will be an issue, but since we are planning on allowing anybody to specify their packs to run the various bulbs you can order the pack(s) you want.

KevinL1, be all end all? My experience is that there is ALWAYS something newer,bigger, and better!

js, some of your questions have been answered above, but I think these are the rest.

Gy6.35 socket IS ceramic and I'm experimenting with a universal socket right now that will fit anything from a 4 up past the 6.35, so your 64440IRC should work as long as you can drive it the way you want. I have several on order also, and am looking forward to them.

From what I can tell so far, an overdriven 64623 closely approaches the 64625 with significantly more margin for error, and the 62138 throws a beautiful central spot without any problems being slightly overdriven.

So far I think that catches me up!
