I need to make a light engine for McGizmo's mule on a budget. (wife acceptance factor here).

These are the components I think will work for cheap I hope.

Wizard2 520ma with r2 set for 650ma (on clearance)
Escrew can
Cree on Mcpcb 650 (also on special)
Arctic Epoxy

Total comes to $39.38

Do I have this right?

also where do I get the Teflon wire.

Any replies would be appreciated Thanks lyrrag

Do not get the E screw can. It requires an E screw, and is made for Luxeon or Seoul LED's.

You need an XR can. It is made for use with a CREE LED on the MCPCB.

I apologize for bumping in here. I have two mules and no LE. While I'm waiting for the GDuPs I would like to try and build an LE. I don't think I can pass at $40.

Although I have some experience in electronic solder and assembly, I have never even seen one of these LE in person. Is there a tutorial posted somewhere on building a Mule LE?

If you get the XR can that should do it. Should drop the price a bit as well, since the XR can is the cheapest one they have made. I just made a few similar light engines and they work great.

My gut guess is that as soon as production GDuP light engines become available that many people will be upgrading existing lights and that would mean that the LE that was in there will no longer be needed and thus become excess. I believe these can be had for a good price on BST when that occurs.

Remember, all the LEs out there now are basically a single level light engine. In todays world that is considered sub par for many. Take that into careful consideration before buying or making a single level light engine.

It is why many are patiently waiting for the GDuP to come out.

The price of the GDuP LE is very economical considering it replaces three seperate single level lights. You would have to carry three separate lights vs one that has three levels. IMHO the price is well justified for the functionality.

I say it never hurts to have a spare LE or two around, especially if you have multiple mule and A19 heads. I have a few and could probably use a few more.

I'd get these pieces (for $38), practice making LE's, and then buy the GDuP when it is available. If you just sold the one you made for cost, it would go in about a minute, IMO. I have a GDuP and it is great, but some people prefer the single speed regardless.

Ok retry at this

Cree McPcb 650
Wizard 2 520ma r2 set for 650ma
XR can
Arctic Epoxy

Total 31 dollars and some change plus shipping.

Do I just mount the LED pcb to the can with the epoxy?

Thanks for the help from everyone. lyrrag

P.S. This is what makes CPF an awesome forum.

You can glue in the Metal Core PCB to the XR Can or you can use a center punch tool and peen in the MCPCB. If you peen it in you will need to use thermal grease under the MCPCB.
