What's so unaesthetic about knurling? BTW, that Agrip sounds interesting, very expensive though. Anyone seen it in Canadian stores?

GarageBoy,

Actually, the EDC Basic and EDC Extreme do not use "1W" LEDs, they use "3W" LEDs for much better performance and longer battery run times.

He could be picking the better bins for the Ultimates, the ones which CAN do 60-70 lumens reliably, and use the cheaper ones for the 40-lumen lights. Given the range I've seen in Luxeons 3Ws, this doesn't seem too far out.

Hey, wimps, tape a cheese grater to your light and stop complaining about the knurling! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mecry.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/poke2.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink2.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/au.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/drunk.gif

GarageBoy,

As Haesslich surmises, there are additional levels of sorting to ensure proper performance within our set of standards. This raises the actual cost of the LEDs that go into the EDC Ultimate and hence forces us to charge a higher price. Not every LED qualifies to be placed in an EDC Ultimate and we have to amortize the cost of those non-qualifying LEDs somewhere. The EDC Ultimate is just a more difficult product to manufacture. But I think you will find it is well worth the price.

This thread sounds like a good bit of advertising. Does anyone have one of these lights to give us all a review so we can see how it performs in practice.

Looks like a real nice bit of kit

PeterW,

Battery life on the Maximum setting for the EDC Extreme (40 lumens) will be around 35 minutes and for the EDC Ultimate (60 lumens) will be around 20 minutes. At the 8 lumen setting - around level 6 and 7 respectively - you can expect around 8 hours. On the Minimum setting, you can expect over a month (720 hours) on one battery. All at constant brightness.

The EDC Extreme on level 1 has about the same output as the EDC Ultimate on level 2 - so the 40 lumens rating is actually closer to 46 lumens. We may change the literature to reflect this.

Henry.

That is amazing runtime. I think I'm sold.

I agree with the current knurling that is shown in the picture of the HDS EDC. IMO it looks great and will make the light easire to handle, it is impossable to please everyone. Just as important is how tough they are if dropped? I have heard of ARC switches being stuffed from a four foot drop, this does not sound like a rugged light to me.

I hope HDS keeps the current knurling, and if anything make it more aggressive. Currently it looks very impressive.

very nice design, especially the tail end.
my question is: if i opt to take out the clip, just like in the pix, with the 2 little open holes, will it still be water tight???
and, will the production lights be a 2 tone finish just like the pix shows?

Henry,
Are we still on schedule for delivery in October?? I need a Basic, 40 lumens, no frills, sounds like a great light. Just what I want!!! Any updates on progress??? Doug /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Henry,

I know you were talking about knurling when you wrote this, but I wanted to throw in that I'd love to see a 2x123A light using a 2 stage switch like Don "McGizmo" has been making and set up so that the first position uses the programmed output and the second level is always full brightness. I'd also like to see it offered with to different user changable reflectors, one narrower and one more flood.

Thanks for listening,

Re: the knurling. I'd prefer a gentle type of knurling and less of it. I think the present degree of knurling really does detract from the appearance.

A suggestion.....why not make the light with less knurling for those who want it that way, and supply an auxillary rubber sleeve which could be pulled over the light by those who need more grip. Replacement sleeves could be made available and they would help protect the finish of the light.

I kind of like the idea of a replaceable rubber sleeve. I first starting thinking about this quite a while back with the SL Scorpion. The light felt great in the hand, but the problem was that if the rubber was damaged, it impacted the function of the light (allows dirt and water to get in). It seemed to me the best thing was to carve out a little "inlay" section and lay rubber in there. That way it wouldn't look like an add on, but it also wouldn't impact the function of the light if it got damaged. The other good thing about a rubber part is that it would make it much nicer if you need to hold the light in your teeth.

Serial numbers I recommend. I like personalized feature, plus its easy to identify two or more lights apart. Please consider serial numbers (like Surefire does, and Arc use to do on their 4+ and LS).

The knurling could look a little more stylish I guess, perhaps by leaving a few clear gaps, but the rubber sleeve idea I've tried with my Streamlights and Surefires. After almost continuous use for more than an hour, one battery closest to the head got stuck in the Streamlight three AA Luxeon Star, I think maybe due to heat retention. The company immediately gave me another one, saying the bicycle inner tube I used shouldn't be a problem, still it's something to think about. Rubber bands may be a better idea, functionally at least. Nether is too tasty though...

BTW, I'm considering an Ultimate and also possibly organizing a group buy, so long as being stuck here in the Great White North does not prevent it somehow. Anyone who may be interested, whatever their HDS light choices, can PM to discuss further.

My main personal concern with these products is that they match the ruggedness and quality of Arcs in every respect. Secondary would be moddability, additional options such as AA barrels and readily accessible customer service, of course. Not wanting to cause offensiveness towards anyone, but something will have to eventually replace Arc if they really and truly will no longer be producing flashlights. That means the equivalent or better in terms of size and versatility, as well.

The overal shape of the light is good,
I like the tail, it should feel good in your hand when used in "cigar" mode.

But, the knurling needs alot of work.
I assume that is just a proto anyway, but I really dont like the completely knurled head.
Kurling is a great way to give a light more character and "shape".
Just knurling all of the head like that doesnt look good.

At any rate, from what I have heard about these lights, they should be very nice, and meet the standards we have some to know from another company, I think you know who I mean.
Although, I still have mixed feelings about that whole situation, I am staying open to these new HDS lights.

Look forward to see what comes of this...

-John
