Wow. Just....wow...

This thing is amazing. Got it off a fellow CPF'er (thanks!) and love it.

Man this thing is TINY, and MAN does it put out a LOT of light.

Whoever said this said it best; you don't look for things with the L4, you see them.

Bottom line; if you want to SEE things, rather than LOOK for them with a flashlight, get the L4. It truly lights up a room. Throw isn't too bad either and it has a very large, but not overly intense, hotspot.

Quality is superb overall. Thing is built like a little tank, yet it is very light and compact. Knurling is nice and grippy, yet not overly aggressive, IMO. It is a bit rough on my leather wallet that it sits next to in my pocket, but oh well...

The whole thing is the same color, except for the part of the bezel that has the scallops cut into it. (not the very end, the part right below that that you are supposed to grip when twisting the bezel off the body.) It is a lighter, more green color than the rest of the body. Doesn't bother me. I think the contrast is actually kinda neat.

I'm not sure about the quality of the Z57 though. (Surprise!) It has what I guess is SF’s loc-tite compound (black in color) that leaked out on the very end seam of the cap around the actual rubber switch, and there is a dab on the knurling itself. It isn’t that smooth when clicking to constant-on and requires thumb tip pressure to click through fully. There is a replacement on the way from SF, so we’ll see how that one is. I may try the mod that one of our esteemed members was so kind as to post.

I say that I’m not sure about it because there are sometimes when it doesn’t really bother me that it is stiff or it doesn’t seem stiff. Besides, momentary-on gets the majority of the use anyway. Every other click or so, it emits a faint, tinny “sproingy” sound which *really* bothers me because it sounds cheap. Oh well…

I think that the switch problems really are a big deal, since they are the mechanism that turns the light on and off. It would be like GM shipping cars with faulty starting mechanisms. Not good at all…

The thing that really did impress me was the pocket clip; I was expecting it to be far weaker based on what I’ve read here. That thing is STRONG. I’m not sure if the length is good or not; the longer one from the E2eO might be better assuming it is as tense as this little guy. Regardless, the L4 is compact enough to stick in a pocket, so the clip is moot anyway. I don’t use it. I actually may remove it since it gets in the way of my grip sometimes. How do you remove it, anyway?

Back on to the light itself, I’m VERY pleased with it. I did an informal side-by-side test (sorry, no digicam so no pics) and it is brighter than my 3 D-cell mag with better spill as well. Oh, no hole nor rings in the beam either, not to mention the FAR superior white color, compared to the sickly gold of the mag.

As to the color, well…I can’t really tell. Sometimes I think I see a *very* slight green tint, but when I shine it on white paper, it looks pretty pure white. I would really have to compare it to other L4’s to get an idea. Regardless, there is no wild tint of any sort that I can see, so I’m happy with it. Did I mention how much light this thing puts out? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Is the L4 too bright for everyday carry? It depends. It’s not blindingly bright; it has such a nice, broad, pleasing beam with a nice large hotspot (which again, is not too intense). Again, you just SEE stuff with this thing. So it depends if you need/want that or not. I happen to want a lot of light, so I like it. But its not as if I turn it on and “OMG I’m blind!” It’s not like that. But flick it on in the middle of a dark movie theater and you’ll turn more than a few heads. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Overall, I’d say the L4 paired with something longer-running like an X5, AAA or CMG Ultra is a pretty hard combo to beat for most people’s lighting needs. For me, the L4 is probably overkill, but I don’t care because I love it so much.

Do yourself a favor and don't buy another L4 to compare it to. Leave well enough alone..... trust me. You can easily make yourself quite insane once you start looking for the "perfect" L4. I haven't seen as many as others here, but I honestly don't think I've ever seen two that were exactly the same. Creamy white, slightly green, a little violet, stark white. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif I still can't figure out what type of tint I prefer the best. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif

Anyway, thanks for sharing your impressions of the L4. It certainly is an exceptional light, even with the cruddy switch.

The temptation to buy another to compare was quite strong, especially as there has been a rash of L4s on sale here. I resisted though and I am glad I did because you're right; I would have just driven myself nuts and wasted time and money on going to the post office so much.

Truly a sweet light... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Peter's absolutely right. After you get your second one and it's different from your first, the temptation to keep buying and buying and buying until you get the "perfect" one is just too great. I stopped after two but every time I see one in B/S/T, I have to perform Lamaze technique on myself /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Excellent summary of the L4, DrJones.

To remove the clip, (if you are sure) first remove the head. Second, carefully remove the o-ring. Next, slide a business card between the clip and the body. The clip is hard enough to mark even the HA III body, so you want to protect it. There is probably a tiny black spacer (rectangular) behind the clip. Be aware, as you don't want to lose it in case you want to put the clip back on later.
Now find a surface that you can push down on firmly with the tip of the clip, with the head of the flashlight facing up. Remember, the clip is steel, and the body of the light is hard anodized aluminum, so if you do this on a kitchen counter, or a nice desk, you will probably leave a mark or two! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Best to use something like a workbench.
Think about what will happen to your fingers or knuckles if the clip moves suddenly. Adjust your grip to compensate.

Now, push firmly down.

Presto...
hmmmn... it looked better with the clip on, didn't it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif
Now put it back. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif

Seriously, be sure you want to take it off, because it is a little tricky, and you really can mark the light up if you are not careful. Also, the little black spacer (technically called the little black thingy) is not easy to reseat... you need slide the clip back in a little at a time, and keep pushing the spacer in a little at a time with a slotted screwdriver of appropriate size... (another GREAT opportunity to scratch up the light. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jpshakehead.gif)

I have had the clip off and on my E2E without incident, but I will probably never do it again.

I have heard that the longer clip from the E2O and others is not as tight as the shorter clip, though I have not used it myself, but it is probably more appropriate to clipping a light onto bulkier cold weather gear and web straps, etc.

I am glad to hear you are enjoying your light. I love mine too! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I forgot to mention... with the clip off, the light is not as weather resistant as with the clip on, as the o-ring is not held as firmly in place at the clip position. Just something to be aware of...

Good review Doc,
The clip IS a tricky thing. I called and asked Surefire and they said "easy"~and gave me the instructions. "Place the clip *only on the side of a phone book or work bench and smack the top of the body and the clip pops right off". Well, I did and it DID. Only when I was trying to put the new, longer clip on, it was SO difficult that I ruined the *first L4 body. I had to call Dan and order another one! If you take it off...be SURE you never want to put it back on because it is one pisser to do! (Can I say "pisser"? That's what describes my bloody fingers and the screwdriver that I poked through my palm the best. Tell me if you want me to "edit".)
I purchased my TW4 from Tactical Warehouse. As an afterthought, I also purchased the L4 "tube" so I could "convert" the TW4 to an L4 and run on two batteries if I wanted to. I now have the "new" L4 tube installed. The L4 does indeed light up the whole wall of a darkened bedroom. However mine also lights up the highest branch of the tallest tree in my back yard where the Owl I'm feeding lives.<shrug> I couldn't be more happy with my light. (AND Dan!) An illness robbed me of quite a bit of my color vision (Spinal Meningitis), but my TW4/L4 seems like it has a bright white beam.

YiKeS!!!
Will, I am feeling really lucky after reading your post that I got off so easy when I did mine. I would never do it again! That really is an awesome light though, isn't it!

BTW,,, what kind of owl is that? I almost hit one with the van the other night on the way home... it flew right in front of me as it descended on something on the side of the road. Fortunately I was just "putting along" at about 40mph, and just had a close sighting instead of a cloud of feathers. Size and field markings make me think it was a great horned owl... and they are not uncommon around here.

RevDave-

No I didn't, perhaps if your not busy, you could do it?

GregR

P.S. If you wouldn't mind CC me on that also, that way I know he's beeen properly inagurated /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Surefire L4 body received today

I guess I can say I joined the L4 camp today. I bought the L4 body from Tactical Warehouse (simply the best!), and the body arrived today. I swapped the KL4 head and the Z57 tail from my TW4 (E1e) body. I am completely blown away by the brightness... much more than I was expecting! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Now I've got plenty of different light configurations... now if only the power would go out... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Surefire L4 body received today

RevDavid,
Dan's interested in my Owl too. I believe he's a big Barn Owl. He's over a foot tall. Sometimes I see a Great Horned Owl, but it's like he's just passing through.
Great Horned Owls are SO big, I can hear them "flap" their wings. (And I'm completely deaf on the right side!) This is the one benefit of insomnia. I go out in my back yard and enjoy the "night animals". The way it all started was that my next door neighbors came home late one night and this big Owl was sitting on top of their 'fridge. (Probably fell down the chimney.) They called the Zoo and someone came out, captured the Owl, and let him loose in this neighborhood. And I reckon he liked this area because he just stayed. That's been about five years ago. Winter or summer~~he stays. He starts "hooting" at me around 2300 hours and I take him out some raw meat in a pan. I honestly believe he's attracted to my L4. Twice, he's swooped down and grabbed some meat BEFORE I sat the pan down. Up close like that, he's a BIG BOY! He doesn't seem to mind when I light him up with my L4. He just sets up there and stares at me while he munches. I also had an experience with a Snowy Owl. I was at the airport and I decided to go sit in a small wooded area and eat my lunch before I had to fly. A fellow who had also brought his lunch came with me for some lunchtime conversation. He finished his Pepsi and just tossed the can over his shoulder. Well, the empty can hit an old hollow tree. We began to hear this whoosh, whoosh, whoosh sound and a bright white Snowy Owl rose out of that tree. It was a beautiful sight for a bird watcher! I'll never forget that.

Will
And yes, the L4 is an awesome light!

Re: Surefire L4 body received today

Wow... that's cool Will.
I have only seen owls up close like that at exhibits, except for a couple of close calls with the car. I got too close to a Snowy Owl one night in New Hampshire, and I almost drove off the road. It just seemed to come out of nowhere and flew across the road in front of me. I hit the brakes, and slid on the ice and...
managed to regain control, so I am still here to talk about it. Those things look enormous up close, though. First impression when they pop out of nowhere is wingspan of forty feet, eyes like basketballs...
but even when reality hits you, that's still one big bird.
I think the most impressive I have seen personally was a great grey owl that was "visiting" New England from Canada. I saw it on a remote fishing pond in Weare during the day. It is one impressive bird.

RevDavid,
Great Grey Owl...hummm. I'm not familiar with that "model". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I'll have to look him up in my bird book. However, it does remind me of a bird that (somehow) is becoming more familiar to Kentucky. I guess they've gone South by now, but I saw several Great Blue Herons this summer. I could have used a good small light like my TW4/L4 to watch the pond in the evening, but that was well before my "flashlight addiction". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif It's been a little difficult to explain to my wife just why I need so many, but she really doesn't care what I buy. She just says, "As long as it makes you happy". I did notice one of my PALights on her desk the other day so she may be coming around.
