My little RC-Car headlights (2x cree)

Just thought I'd post a couple of pics of some headlights I made for my rc-car. I'm using two cree xr-e's with McR-17XR reflectors. As my battery is 9.9 volts, I'm using 3x15ohm resistors which gives me about 680mA. The little 1/4watt resistors do get hot dissipating about 3/4watt each though :)

Just used some right angled aluminium that I had lying around, and it was a fun project one night, and turned out pretty well.

Its bright enough, and throws well enough. It doesn't have much wide angle spill, but it still works great. Because the lights are so low though you end up driving over a mound at 40mph and because it didn't light up the far side, you end up driving into a tree stump :)

edit: it is actually straight.. I swear :) Or at least it is if I screw it on properly

Sweet! I'm still looking to get into the RC car hobby myself.

Have you considered mounting some LED's on an overhead rack similar to the way they are mounted on some trucks?

Cool Mod

What kind of car is that? It looks like it has quite a bit or torque

Nice RC mod

Instead of resistors, you could use the SOB driver from the Shoppe. This would be able to drive both LEDs in series from 9.9V.

The Buckpuck would be even better than the SOB since it requires no additional heatsinking.

Hmm Mamba Brushless system and Lithiums?? Nice set-up, whats that truck? I dont recognize the chassis...

The car is actually an associated TC3 1/10th scale touring car... which I then cut in half :) I took about 80mm of the wheelbase, jacked up the suspension and put some off road tires on it... well a bit more complicated than that but still...

So basically I have a 1/16th scale truck with 1/10th scale power... kinda like putting a nitrous v8 in a small hatchback :)
It probably goes about 50 - 60mph depending on gearing, but in reality the car is too small to go that fast with any kind of stability... I tried doing a speed run a couple of weeks ago but when I floored it, already going about 30mph, it did a backflip and landed back on its wheels .. I've never seen anything else do that.

I went with resistors for the light because I don't need efficiency (well except to keep heat down, it does get hot if the car isn't moving). The batteries are 2300mah, so lights only should give me 2 or 3 hours battery life. When the battery when driving only lasts 10-15 mins... you can see why I didn't care about efficiency.

edit: heres some pics of the car (pre-lights):
