I bought my first three performance flashlights at Xmas to try and understand something about this field and hobby.
This site is invaluable. And such generous contributors.
But there was too much reading and not enough evaluating.
Got ITP's – A3 EOS, C6R & a C7T.
I'm semi-retired and don't go out at night much, especially in the winter.
Next I think I'll investigate an EDC for me.
I know a little and know I don't know a lot.
For this specific use flashlight I want to buy three to evaluate. I want good value, durable and compact lights built for a 1xAAA, a 1xAA and a 1xCR123. The selection criteria is the same for each. It's not inconceivable I'll keep one of each and trade them off and let them take turns lighting my way. Or give them as gifts.
Selection Criteria:
Used for showing off or more practically looking in dark places during the day and evening. Outside at night it will become a back-up.
Will only carry it in a pocket.
MUST be one-handed – no twist lights, just easy to use tail buttons (too arthritic)
MUST be a floody – indoor light only – a good wall of light and good ceiling bounce
MUST remember last mode
Must be H-M-L, or order easily selected by user; such that one click is P1, 2nd click P2, and 3rd third P3
MUST Tail Stand
Pocket clip or lanyard facilities not required, and if supplied must be removable (tail stand).
Not really concerned about run-times or excessive heat handling problems. Using less than 3 minutes per use
Don't require strobe, s.o.s, or anything other fancy modes, unless buried in the UI so deep I don't have to worry
As bright as I can get taking the above into account
SO.
AAA – As mentioned the A3 EOS was one of my first lights. I think it's a thing of affordable beauty. I don't carry on a keychain; it's carried in a pocket.
It doesn't tail stand! I didn't know I needed it.
It's a twist. The rubber O ring between the head and body starts to compress about 1 ½ turns before contact/on. It takes about an 1/8th turn back to turn off. Any less and it goes off but if you compress the light lengthways, like in a jeans watch pocket, it will come on again. I tried taking off the washer but it then has a cheap, funny feel. My arthritic hands (thumbs at this point) have difficulty with a twist on even a light this small. Is it the same principal with all the twists?
This size seems almost to be the winner for me. In the jeans watch pocket or the 'athletic' wear. Don't know it's there. So tough competition.
I ordered a Liteflux LF2XT to replace the EOS. Any others? Mistake?
AA - Have the C7R (egular). It's a very well built light. I find I don't use the 'infinitely variable'. Because of my use and habits it's a one mode (high) light. Less functional than if it had fixed brightness modes.
I also have a bad habit of turning the light on and off and on as I look around, then I get into strobe modes!
It seems a bit heavy and bulky for a pocket. I'll try and carry for the next week to better compare this size (so leave the A3 EOS!)
I like the momentary press to change mode. Better if it was brightness modes.
Unstable tail stand, on or off, but hasn't fallen over yet.
Seems too much of a thrower, but need to try alternatives.
What should I look at?
Zebralight H501 – only twisty, but looked ideal!
Lunapower Connexion X2 looks good. Smaller, lighter than C7. OK? Other suggestions?
CR123 – I'm anxious to get a single CR123 and try it.
What about the Lunapower Incendio?
Others?
And just think, this is only the first of task-specific flashlights I have to research, buy, and evaluate. Oh joy.
thanks in advance
