The "best" cells that I have run across are the LG 2400 mAh and the Sanyo 2400 mAh.

"bang for the buck"? the LG-2000ma cells, but that is so Un-CandlePOWER, cheap but lower capacity
so the more expencive 2400ma LG, would be the "best bang for a few more bucks"
or for the best "waste of a buck" the even more expencive 2600ma LG, which isnt diddly more capacity than the 2400
but for the "best i didnt burn my house down for a buck" you still have to get some protection on them!

DON'T buy Ultrafire 18650s. Read this thread about them. And never EVER buy ANY cells, primary or rechargeable, through eBay.
Here is the link for AW's Protected Li-Ion cells, which are not the cheapest but are the best IMO. Grun, you are right about that. You get what you pay for.

stick to protected cells from AW, Pila, or Wolf-Eyes for most applications. If you know what you are doing or have an application that has protection built in, or that you can add it to, then Silevrfoxes recommendation of the LGs undoubtedly spot on (as he knows his stuff and has done more battery testing than anyone should ever be expected to in a life time, lol)
