Hi
I am looking for an hid or led spotlight replacement for a 15 million candle power spotlight.
Weight isn't very important.
Budget is 300
usage is primarily for beach fun at night: crabbing and such.
Recharge time isn't very important and run time needs to be about 45 minutes
would prefer something brighter than existing cyclops light.

you wont find many led lights that can match the throw your light can produce. so afr halogens and hid beat leds at it. (practical throw), but as far as lumens go, there are hundreds of options.

if focus and long throw is important, loook at titanum inovation l35 hid light. check it out at battery junction. there are few reviews there too.

if throw is not important, than there are hundreds of led lights out there. nitecore tm 11-15-26 are very bright, and small. fenix tk75 is another option, also somewhat compact

Brightness is probably the most important. To be honest, I really like blowing people away with the light and it really helps to have a big intensity. I would like something brighter than the 15 million candle power of my old halogen cyclops. Durability is moderate, I don't need anything designed for heavy duty use.
Given that, does it change the recommendation?
 
If you really want to WOW them, then retrofit the Cyclops with a 70-Watt, fast starting ballast and lamp kit using a 5,000K color temp lamp. The stock 7Ah lead acid battery will run it ok but not sure you'll have the 45 min run time. Probably a solid 30+. I think you can also buy 9Ah SLA's in the same physical size which would probably get you your 45 min. HID's are not as forgiving when it comes to frequent on and off cycles. It doesn't "hurt" anything but will shorten lamp life from approx 2000 hours to maybe 1000 hours. You should be able to do all this for under $125.00 including the larger battery. How are your technical skills?

The net increase in Lumens produced will be somewhere around 350% and throw will increase due to the smaller light point source of the HID lamp and the increased brightness. Keep in-mind that the human eye needs to see about 3-4 times brightness to "see double the brightness". So even though true brightness will be 3.5+-fold, your eyes will think double brightness.

if throw is not important only lumens are, than get tk75, if quality is also important, if not so much, get those china made 7-9-12xml lights from e bay, they run for about $150 max. quality wise it is a lotto. they advertise 7-9-13 tousands lummen, but cut that in half or even more and you get real lumens, still a lot thou.
 
Price, size, desired options? I'm going to hazard a guess that the halogen you have is not actually 15mcp. Do you want adjustable focus? Does it need water/weather proofing?

thanks for the feedback. Let me to address your good questions.

I'd prefer not to monkey with the existing light since I will hand it down to someone else when I get a new one.

The existing light is advertised at 15 mil candle power but I understand this may be lofty. It's a cyclops brand and looks like a slightly smaller version of a 1967 Buick transmission.

I am not so sensitive to the weight or size of the new unit.

New unit should be able to deal with a light mist in terms if weatherproofing. Extra would be good but not needed.

I don't have focus today but if its available that's a good thing.

I would prefer not to take my chances with cheapo stuff but would like to stay under 350 or so.

Above all I am a shallow guy and really like the intensity and output of a huge light. :)

I agree with Norm. I own the Ryobi Xenon High Beam as well as a Cyclops Thor 15MCP halogen spotlight, and the Ryobi, while being only a third of the size, is exponentially brighter than the 15 mcp and blows it away visually. $50 for the light, $40 for the cheapest one+ battery, and should be around $30-$50 for a battery charger, all from Home Depot.

The other options I highly recommend are the Stanley FatMax Lithium HID rechargeable spotlight $70 from Lowe's and the Stanley FatMax 10 watt LED spotlight. The Lithium HID by Stanley is not as bright as the Ryobi but it does have a bit more throw, so its beam profile will be more like that of a large reflector spotlight like what you had. The Ryobi is more of a flood although it is a great thrower too.

The Stanley FatMax 10 Watt LED spotlight $50 from Walmart (where it is rated 2000 lumens), or Lowe's (where it is rated 755 lumens) is an XML light and is simply the brightest and most powerful LED light you can find at a standard retail outlet you can drive to. It competes more with a 3 million candlepower halogen spotlight though, so it will not be up to par with your expectations of a light to replace the 15MCP. Definitely go with either the Ryobi or Stanley HID, IMO.

I'm sorry but ANY large reflector hid mod light will cream either the ryobi or Stanley hid, I have a 35w Stanley and my Handsun annihilates it, in spot or flood mode, not to mention 2-3x the run time, AND I don't have to hold it like you do with a pistol grip light. My Stanley now sits on a shelf with a blacklight lens on it for when I need to fluoresce something.
