I don't want a bright AA light, I want a AA light with decent runtime and just enough power to see. Even 1 watt models are a bit too bright. Does anyone know of a decent light that fits? Runtime is my primary concern. Secondary concern is flood. Well, just like the E01, but in AA.

Thanks!

How about a Nitecore D10 with the new Golden Dragon Plus LED? You could just run it in max low for long run time, and plenty of light to see by. If you ever needed a bit more light you can ramp it up. You also have the option to crank it up to full power if ever needed.

Coupon CPF8 gets you an 8% discount, and shipping is free. :)

Also for a AA light it's very small.

IIRC the E01 is a single mode, so...
The original CMG Infinity may be a candidate, as would be the brighter Ultra Infinity [not that bright by today's standards]. Gerber bought out CMG and produced the same models. Both are very rugged and long running.

If you are looking for even higher build quality, Peak makes a few AA lights which you can get in a range of brightness/runtimes.

If you are on a tight budget look at the Nichia-based Gerber lights.
Infinity ultra is the AA model, the civilian version is only around $17. The military issue is around $35. The two are identical except the military version has a thick side wall around the emitter to limit flood. Both are water resistant.

I have the smaller AAA Gerber Tempo and like it. Seems solid and well built, although unlike the infinity ultra the Tempo is not water resistant. They had some open-packages at REI and all the Gerber lights felt really solid and hefty, with a satin smooth finish. The only ones that are floody / open-emitter design are the Tempo and IU.

A 1xAA version fenix E01 in the $20 ballpark with LOOOONG run times would be such a killer IMHO.

**edit**
this tek-tite looks really nice too... if you can swing 3.6V Lithium batteries.

I could have sworn Pelican makes a similar light.

Yes, indeed, a AA E01 would be the ticket, but I like the Nitecore idea and I'm going to check out the rest. I saw some cheap 1 watt LEDs on eBay (five for about $15) and I thought about them, but it's a bit too much light. I love the Fenix L2D, but its lowest setting is still too bright.

Thanks again.

IMO the standard D10 is too throwy for use as a low power light. Of course, the GDP might be better.

From what I read from your post.
I think you have not touch the Fenix L0D.

The L0D is quite floody.
The runtime on low is 8.5hrs.

Get 1 and come back to post to prove I am wrong.

Though I really like my D10, and it could fit your bill, I think a Gerber Infinity Ultra is more what you are looking for. Stick a Lithium in it for some added brightness, better runtime and a bit of regulation.

i have the LOD Q4 and LiteFlux LF2X and i was little disappointed (to much throw fore me). i want my key chain lights to be flood lights.
but the
JETBeam JET-μ is a flood king.
and Fenix E01 it's a
really good budget light.
i got a Fenix L0D R088 on the way from eliteled
and that shoud be a flood light.

L1T V2,0 is a good aa light

best regards

Although the L0D is a great light, it's not AA ;)

+1 for CMG/Gerber Infinity Ultra and/or for Nitecore D10. With the NC just set it to whatever level you want and then you can use it as a twisty. I just saw a runtime graph for these on low and it was over 100 hours even on an alkaline. With lithium it was over 150 hours. Of course on low it's like 1 lumen but I still find that I use this setting the most.................

+1 for the CMG Infinity Ultra. I carry one in my poclet daily and it meets most of my needs. I have 4 green Infininty Ultras (white LED) still in the package, two blue/green LED, 2 yellow LED, and 5 Ultra G's (white LED). I have several of the Gerber version in white and red but I don't like them as well. The body seems a lot thinner. There is a spring in the Gerber. The lanyard hole is in the tail cap and is more likely to unscrew.....the Gerbers have actually twisted on in my pocket. The Gerber is not a bad light... just comes up short in comparison in my opinion.
Oh, both have been tested on my wife's key chain and the Gerber is losing finish at an amazing rate. The Gerber's finish seems little more than paint.
The CMG given the same treatment has almost all its orginal finish.
There is some battery rattle in the CMG but this can be stopped by wraping a post-it sized piece of paper around the battery.

Fenix should make an AA version of the E01 with GIU runtime and call it the E02!!
