Howdy & Happy New Year-

I have a co-worker who is running a 50 mile crosscountry race on Catalina Island this Saturday. In the past he has used a 4 AA LED flashlight from REI . Those models provide less than ideal lighting of the rocky terrain.

I have offered Ken a KL1 with a 3-cell TW body for this 11 hour race. He needs decent lighting for the first 3 hours of the race only. Then the light is dead weight. In fact he usually discards his light in a drop box and "usually" gets it back after the race. The KL1/TW3 is fairly light and it fits into a Pelican M6 belt holster. I want him to carry it all the way home of course /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Is this configuration going to get him there? With fresh batteries what is the expected runtime? Thanks for any help on this matter.

The KL1 with 3x123 is about 7-8 hours.
The KL1 with AAs isn't so good. Check the runtime plots in the reviews Forum for the KL1~UBH~9 volt & Kl1~UBH~AA.

I don't have the 3 cell body, but rough estimates of the runtime are up to about 6 hours or so. Even if its 5 hours realistically, I think Ken will have the 3 hours covered easily.

Wish him good luck from us at CPF! And if he wins, just get him to mention you and CPF as gratitude! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Would a headlamp be a better candidate for running instead? SOmething like a Tikka Plus (4 Led) or one of the newer LS ones maybe? They're usually pretty lightweight as well...

P/S, WHERE did you say he is supposed to drop off the light off again? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Thanks Hoghead and Stanley.

Stanley-I asked Ken about a head lamp and he preferrs the torch in his hand. That way he can look at particular terrain features at will; rather than having to point with his head. Guess it makes him feel safer that way. So glad to hear the 3-cell will get him through.

He won't win, but rather try to meet or beat his previous times. Some take 18 hours and he has run it in under 11 hours a few times. Not bad for an over-fifty engineer. Don't know exactly how fast the winner runs it. I doubt if I've even run 50 miles cumulatively yet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks again fellows.
