Hi all, my name is Jos and I'm addicted to Flashlights :D

I just bought an new in the box SureFire 6RT. I know it is an oldie but I think it has great potentional in it.
The bulb it is using is an 4N and not very common, very hard to get in the Netherlands. I believe it is capable of 50 Lumens, not much nowadays.

The question is, are there other bulbs who will fit this light without modification or can it be easy modded for other bulb's or a LED module? A runtime of 20 minutes will do just fine.

Any suggestion would help. Thanks for reading.

Jos

Welcome to CPF!

You have quite a rare SureFire there. Nice!
The T4 TurboHead Kit used by the 6R and 7Z uses the N4 lamp assembly.

Using this rare "T-Series" 3" diameter extended range TurboHead...

You can use an N1 lamp on two-SF123A batteries (by removing the A14 body extender from your 6R to create a 6P).

You can also use the N2 lamp on three-SF123A batteries (by replacing the A14 with an A19 body extender to effectively create a 9P).

The problem with the T-Series TurboHead is the reflector surface finish is more mirror-like compared to modern TurboHeads because it was intended for smaller filament lamps such as the N1, N2, N4, N5.

It is possible to use modern TurboHead Lamp Assemblies in the T-Series TurboHead but the beam may not be as nice due to this "MN" Lamps having larger, wider, thicker, longer filaments.

I find the MN15/MN16 for three-SF123A models do not work very well. Neither do the MN60/MN61 lamps for four-SF123A models. But it is very much a result of the specific individual lamp and TurboHead combination.

One of the dangers of playing around too much with the T-Series TurboHeads is that if it gets damaged, SureFire may not have any stock left to repair/replace it.

I use a T-Series TurboHead on a 12PM body (using the N62 lamp) - this is an awesome combination - 500 lumens for a few minutes producing an intense beam that is a joy to experience.

I hope you enjoy your time here on CPF!

Al :)

Thank you very much Al.

This is allready of much help to me.

What will happen if I use one of the 9V bulb´s (those who fit the M3T) in my 6RT on only 6V (the supplied NiCa battery)? Will it give me 2/3 of the power it can give or will it be less?

One other question, can the bulb in the N4 module be replaced?

Thanks for reading,
Jos

It's unlikely to even light up more than a glow.
The B65 NiCad battery stick is weak compared to a pair of SF123As so I wouldn't call the N4 a 6V lamp. It shouldn't be powered by two SF123A batteries.

One other question, can the bulb in the N4 module be replaced?
No. SureFire does not use bare bulbs - it uses whole lamp assemblies so the whole assembly is replaced.

I would personally move away from the B65 rechargeable set up.
For best use of such a large diameter bezel I use the most powerful lamp SureFire offered.
I suggest that you at the very least upgrade to a three-SF123A model - get an A19 body extender and an MN15 lamp (I'd also get an MN16 lamp as well but that's me)

Al

Thanks again Al.

This is what I did;

Got myself the MN16 lamp and made an kind of dummy battery for the size I needed to put in 3 cr123a's in the 6RT. I will use the B65 in my 6R :).

I'm still a bit disapointed with the result though, did expect to get more brightness but then again I still have to try it out tonight when it is dark :D . Expect to get very long throw.

Cheers,
Jos

What are you using to create your own battery spacer? There could be resistance in it - this is very bad and will hurt the total output, brilliance and runtime.

Also, are you using SureFire SF123A batteries (new and fresh), or Duracell DL123A batteries? The High Output Lamp Assemblies (HOLA) require the very best batteries designed for high current drain.

Time to bump this thread up ... would this turbo head from the 6RT (which I presumed is called the T4 turbo head?) similar to the T2 3" head? Will this head be able to fit on the 6P/9P bodies? Perhaps Size15's can chime in here?

The 6R is a 6P+A14 body extender.

T1 - N1 lamp for the 6P (two-SF123A battery bodies)
T2 - N2 lamp for the 9P (three-SF123A battery bodies)
T3 - N3 lamp for the 9N only)
T4 - N4 lamp for the 6R/7Z (B65 NiCad battery stick only)
T5 - N5 lamp for the 8X

The N1, N2 & N4 all feature the same TurboHead and adapter collar.
The N5 features the same TurboHead but a dediated collar for the 8X.
The N3 for specifically designed for the 9N (it doesn't fit the 9AN)
