what im wanting to do is make a tri Q5 3D mag. ive never built a light from scratch, so i need some help with parts/ideas. ive been looking around here, but i cant seem to find exactly what im looking for. i was thinking of using this reflector. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11921
im not sure if thats a good idea, or use individual reflectors. if i used that reflector, what heatsink would i use? i found flat ones at the sandwich shoppe, but im not sure if i can use a reflector that deep. i want to be able to use 3 nimh D cells, but im willing to buy a 12AA to 3D adaptor, and use nimhs as well. now, the hard part (for me at least) is what driver(s) do i need to use? i was thinking 3 seperate 1000ma drivers, but i dont really know. any help would be apprciated, and because i really want to do this, id be willing a kick a few bucks to someone who can point me to the things i need. thanks!

EDIT: i had forgotten that i plan on using my 3D for a DD P7. i will be using a 2D with an 8AA to 2D adapter. thanks again!

Heres a good thread for you. The first post discusses the heatsink you want and drivers.

yea i did see that one, but what about reflectors? i wanted to use the ones i mentioned on dx mainly for the ease of centering it once, vs centering 3 individual reflectors. i might tho.

here is a fast start if you like, just swap the leds.

saw that one as well, but i want an op style reflector.

How about this P7 driver?

It will deliver 2.8amps and has 3 modes.

thanks for showing me that. i may use that instead of a DD P7. its a tough choice, imo:thinking:

thanks guys! anyone else??

edit: on a personal note, theres no multi-quote button:( lol. i had to c/p a few times

I'm not sure if that reflector will center over the led's on the PTS-2, but the shoppe has several sizes designed for the XRE's that you should have no problem centering.
Maybe someone else has used that DX reflector and could chime in. I hope you enjoy the build:thumbsup:

I've been using download's multi-sync http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=168062 with great results. Download also posted an interesting driver thread that may be of interest http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=201392.
If you go the multi nimh battery route, you might pair a 9aa(3D) holder and a maxflex driver http://www.taskled.com/maxflex.html. If you go this route, read this thread re heatsinking if you'll be driving the leds hard. Also, I think you'll get a really nice result using 3 Mcr 17xr reflectors even though you'll have to center them. For more flood, I've found that generic, shorter length reflectors work well.

Checked that link and it seems like that module cannot be modded if you need to do it in future. Why don't they save money and time on the glue and make it easier for modders?

i know i cant mod it, but it would be better than the stock incan thats currently in my 3D. (i kinda broke the led...)

i want to do it myself, but i think its a bit above my abilities right now. i think i need to do a bit more learning before i try to put something like that together, however simple it may be.

I have bought two since they were glued, the LEDs pop right off. Not at all like it reads.
