So, I am looking at studio xenon flash assemblies and of course they cost a few bucks.

Could I take a simple halogen lamp like this Chauvet 600W, find an appropriate socket (anyone know what socket size that is), and a reflector from a clamp on work lamp, hook it to a momentary switch and have my flash assembly? I am going to guess that the light won't be as white as it would be with a xenon unit, but that shouldn't matter for my usage. Halogen doesn't have a warm up time, does it? Would this be extremely tough on the bulb?

Oops, it states the base type, so that is easy.

Halogen *does* have a warm-up time. You can't strobe them like a flash pack and expect anywhere near full instensity.

Also, the bulb in question has very short life (I have some DJ fixtures that use them) and won't last long when constantly turned on/off. It also burns very hot and requires a metal or ceramic fixture.

Thanks Blasterman. I found this housing:
But, the warm up time would be a killer.
I am not looking to make a strobe light, I just want to be able to do a short blast, like 1 sec or less. So, the warm up time would be a bummer. And of course shortening the bulb life would be even worse. I mean, if I got like a couple thousand flashes out of it, that would be fine though.

What makes a xenon flash tube with a capacitor able to handle this sort of application I wonder?

1-second should be enough time for that bulb to get to full, or near full intensity. I thought you were talking about time factors in the 1/100s of seconds which is where photo-strobes typically operate.

Flash tubes also have limited life-spans.
