Hi,
I just received my 3 x CREE P5 unmounted, no stars and a mounting plate from Cutter. I tought I made a good deal to buy them separated but now my question is: what is the best way to mount my LEDs on the plate so that the current will go through the 3 LEDs using the +/- welding tabs on the mounting board.

Thanks! :twothumbs

Hi, how think you solder the Cree led to the board?? don't need a special tool??

I use a dremel with a cutting wheel, grind down the two outermost solder pads on the bottom side of the emitter. Make sure to leave the center pad as that is a thermal transfer pad. Then mount to your plate using Artic Silver and then solder your wires to the solder pads on the top of the emitter. If you tin the solder pads on the top of the emitter before mounting to your heatsink plate, it is much easier.

You can also just clip the four corners off of the emitter and this will isolate it. There are some pictures out there, I will try to find you the link

Yeah,

You can't attach those correctly without a reflow oven. Good luck!

I've heard of people having good success using toaster ovens or frying griddles with temperature controls as reflow ovens.

obviously, don't do this with anything you're going to cook food in.

Thats gonna be very difficult. You need some good soldering paste (not flux), some kind of heatsource (since you dont have a reflow oven) and very good skills since you want to line it up perfectly and keep the temperature within limits so you don't fry the LED.

I'd just stick them directly to the heatsink with Arctic Silver Epoxy, and wire them by hand (don't forget to dremel/cut away the vias).

Ok, thanks for the answers... I think I'll have to go with arctic silver and wire the LEDs together... I will glue the LEDs on the back of the holder, it is bare aluminium.

Thanks!
