I was at Target and noticed a new LED lantern from Energizer. It comes in a package of three for just under $20. They run off one single D cell, and claims 200 hours use on a cell. It's designed to be weather-tight, and can be used on a table, hanged by a hook on top, or placed in the yard on the included stakes that come with them.
For plastic lanterns they seem to be fairly solid built and a good value. With a single LED, you can't expect a lot of brightness, but it sufficiently adds a bit of light to an otherwise dark area, or would be great in a power failure.
Since it's a single D cell lantern, it would be a great battery burner, for finishing off partially used cells. With one of the battery adaptors available now, it could finish off anything from a AAA cell to a D cell.
I found it to be a good value for the money.
