I was at Target and noticed a new LED lantern from Energizer. It comes in a package of three for just under $20. They run off one single D cell, and claims 200 hours use on a cell. It's designed to be weather-tight, and can be used on a table, hanged by a hook on top, or placed in the yard on the included stakes that come with them.

For plastic lanterns they seem to be fairly solid built and a good value. With a single LED, you can't expect a lot of brightness, but it sufficiently adds a bit of light to an otherwise dark area, or would be great in a power failure.

Since it's a single D cell lantern, it would be a great battery burner, for finishing off partially used cells. With one of the battery adaptors available now, it could finish off anything from a AAA cell to a D cell.

I found it to be a good value for the money.

Useful at night, in a tent, for the middle of the night visit to the outhouse...

Sounds like an excellent mod candidate /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

3-to-D adapter and a 1W SE?

Pics/part #/model # please? I've been trying to search for them (not knowing exactly what I'm looking for) on the web, but no luck!

Please excuse my slow response. I've had some serious illness in my family that has limited my online activity. The name is "Energizer Accent Lanterns" it's a package of 3 with a model number GTL01DL-3 . The package description says:

3 lights and ground stakes, battery operated - Runs on 1 D cell
Easy Tap on/off switch
Lifetime LED never need replacing
Each light runs 200 hours on 1 D Energizer® alkaline battery

Sounds like something that would be in the gardening / outdoors section. I may have to go take another look-see... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: New Energizer LED lantern Now With PICS!

Ok, stopped by the Target in Warwick, RI (I needed to go to Sam's anyway) and they had this little guys in the flashlight aisle. Being the innate flashaholic, I just couldn't resist, and bought a box. In case you are wondering where the switch is in the pics, you'll see in the final pic (it works like a tap light). And without further ado, on with the show! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

First up, a box shot:

Here's a look at an individual lantern.

I took this shot with a 2 second exposure. I was trying to get a brightness comparison shot. Please ignore the funky stuck pixels... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A shot using the flash. Not very informative, but I liked it, so I'll post it anyway.

Here's the best approximation I could get to the actual light output, as far as lighting up an area. The lantern and candle appear equal to my eyes, but the camera favors the candle. It does show well what the lantern looks like lit up normally, in a dark area.

Last but not least, what have we here? Why, it's some electronics! Gotta have a boost circuit do drive a white LED off of one 1.5V cell. As you can see in the top of the pic, I messed up the plastic somewhat getting it apart. It sticks a little now when you switch it on and off, but I can fix that later with a razorblade.

Overall, I like these little guys. You can set them on a table, mount them on a post, hang them from a hook, even stack them (somewhat). IMO they would look better with the top haveing a clear center section to let the light through, though. Overall, for $20, I'd say they're worth it!

I don't know about the claimed 200 hours runtime, but I'm testing one now, so we'll see... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Tweek, thanks for the pics. How big are these things? Height and diameter? Can't really tell; they look kind of huge. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
