Hello everybody, this is my first post on CPF. I just received my first higher-end flashlight, a TK11 R2. Now upon receiving it, I noticed that it has a textured reflector instead of a smooth one. I thought this was a manufacturing error, so I emailed both the seller and the manufacturer, and Fenix sent me this back:

"Hello Tim
Yes, for the old TK11 R2, there is smooth reflector, but for the early TK11 R2, we have updated to the new kind of textured reflector, and there is not any TK11 R2 with smooth reflector in our company, because this kind of textured reflector can make the beam more beautiful and as well as get the beam high concentrated, it satisfy more customers.
Best regard!"

So apparently the new TK11 R2s have textured reflectors. It appears to be somewhat of a hybrid though. I'd say its only semi-textured if that makes sense. It still has a good hotspot in the middle, and still has a lighter yellow ring around the hotspot, but overall the beam looks pretty smooth and still has really good throw.

If this has already been posted before, I apologize. I searched and couldn't find anything on the subject.

The "orange peel" texture will definitely help smooth out the beam. The TK11 is known as a thrower and usually smooth reflectors come stock in throwers, so any type of peel seems odd - maybe.

Fenix probably found that adding a little texture to the reflector didn't affect the distance of throw, but did help smooth out the beam. I don't know this for a fact, just speculation. Maybe somebody else has more info.

Hope you enjoy your new light.

:welcome:

I don't think this is your first light is it a hybrid or texture? The replied email said it's a texture and will have less throw than a hybrid I guess.

They changed the reflector because we only use these flashlights to point them to a white wall. Ok not always, but at least 90% of the time.

"Flashaholics.. all they care about are the tint and smoothness of the beam, they want a collection piece, not a ilumination tool. Lets change to a OP reflector and make the beam looks prettier in white walls!" -Manufacturers

I'm pretty sure it's a hybrid. It's not super textured like some of the pictures I've seen, just a slightly textured but still polished surface.

richardcpf- Haha that's kinda what I've been getting too. I really wanted this for long distance night hunting, and I'd prefer longer throw over a "pretty" beam. It's somewhat of a shame.

does anyone realize that prettier beam also means more spill. and more spill also means your light is more useful at close ranges?

Get a Dereelight with an aspherical head. No reflector, just square die goodness. Reflectors don't get the distance aspherics do. If you're in the USA, go to the flashlightconnection, they ship very quickly. Be warned, there's almost no spill.
