New LS based Nuwai light at Maplin

Candle Power Forums

Help Support Candle Power:

Way ahead of ya. Impulse-ordered one last sunday following their latest special-offers mail. Preliminary impressions here.

I`ll probably take a beamshot or two in the next few days.

Okay, bought one today...first impressions are kinda "WOW!" So this is what an LS can do. Blows the Reactor 3 clear out of the water, both in throw, overall photon output and beam colour. Will get at least the photos for the review up tonight.

Not often that the words stylish and classy are applied to flashlights costing less than £30, but this one most certainly is!

Okay, just got the page up. No text other than the specs just now I'm afraid, but the photos are there, including one showing it totally obliterating the Reactor3...which was, for about a fortnight, the brightest LED light I owned. Granted, it was also the only LS light I owned. This thing is just in a totally different class though, both in build and output.

Love the colour of the beam too, very pure, almost mistakable for HID, white, no tints, no splodges here or there, just WHITE.

Oh...and it just got the highest score of any review I've done so far. Brightness wise, blows away quite a few incandescents (About on par with the AN-606 with a fresh battery pack) too!

Nuwai ALX-113AA Review page

My basic reccomendation here, is that if you're not yet an owner of an LS based light, and you're thinking about it - grab one of these while they're on offer, I doubt you'll be disappointed so long as your expectations are reasonable!

Just placed an the order for one - with the £2 discount voucher the total comes to £20.49, definitely worth a gamble at that price! Funnily enough, I was thinking of placing an order for an AA battery extension for my ARC LSHF-P this weekend, so this post came at just the right time.

Zelandeth have you tried running it on rechargeables? From the looks of it, there should be enough heatsinking to handle the draw.

Thermal contact between the LS and body could be better, but having said that, it does seem so transfer the heat pretty well.

Would try it on rechargables, apart from the small problem in the fact that I don't have any rechargables to try in it! Sorry I can't help with that one.

As promised I have some beamshots of this thing for everyone. Quite ringy around the edges, and a bit purple too, but sure is bright in the middle....

Here next to a couple of other 1-watters, one with optic and one with reflector:

Shots were taken within a minute of each other, with the hardly-used Duracell batteries it came with. Surprised me too, I was expecting some no-name zinc chloride cells if any! The Arc4 on full power looks about equal in brightness to me (it is on level 3 in that shot), but don`t forget that one is completely regulated whereas the unregulated Nuwai light will drop off in brightness quite fast to begin with.

But for its cost, it really is a good one.

I just bought one of their 3C lights: verrrry nice and they seem to use a new low dome Luxeon with EOS phosphor coating! I did´t even know they existed:)

Mine was despatched today so hopefully it'll arrive tomorrow. I'll stick some rechargeables in it and post some photos of how it compares with my Arc LSHF-P.

Basically people seem to be echoing my opinion there, in that for the money, it's a good one.

Will be interesting to see what Nuwai put on the market over the next couple of years. Maplin seem to be the only stockist of theirs we have locally, will have to keep an eye open for any other LS based lights that appear.

Also noted that they finally seem to have sorted the sealing issue around the switch rubber - well, mine survived twenty minutes standing bezel down in a glass of water anyway, which has always resulted in a leak around there before.

The less than perfect beam pattern seems to be pretty standard for Nuwai's lights, but it's always usable, and they always seem to be plenty bright and very well made for the price.

ALX-113AA also has the advantage of looking like a seriously powerful laser pistol from some 1960's sci-fi movie! And that people keep picking it up and just about blinding themselves with it, not expecting that much light from as small a package as that.

Arrived this morning. It's a beauty - VERY bright. Even when running on NiMhs, although markedly dimmer, it still overpowers my Arc LSHF-P. What really surprised me though was the beam colour, totally white - no discolouring round the edges at all. It makes the beam on my Arc (which up 'till now was my best "white") look decidedly off white/creamy in colour - guess my number came up good in the Luxeon Lottery. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowlaugh.gif

As has already been commented, there are rings in the beam and the led is slightly off centre, and there is also a tiny scuff mark on the surface of the led, but I'm more than happy with my purchase. At £30 it would have been a bargain, at £20 it's a total steal.

Thats the new LXHL-MWEC replacing the LXHL-MW1C - its using the new phospor (EOS?) coating technique similar to the HD AFAIK

Thanks to Adam Gage for this contribution:

have just purchased two of them.
well made,bright good white color.
very heavy for its size.i think it may be may be stainless steel not
aluminium which is suprising.
led is easy to remove.was interested to see that the led mount/pcb/switch
assembly is exactly the same as the streamlight 1 watt .
light output appears better than the streamlight.is certainly a better
white.
with new bats led current is about 500 ma.
in UK is cheaper than streamlight.

Great review, thanks Zelandeth!

Nuwai seems to be coming out with some pretty interesting lights. That's all I need, more temptation.
