New member, new to lights!

Well new to high-end flashlights anyway. To paraphrase Carrot, I'm "no longer joe public". :twothumbs

After reading CPF for a while I've decided that a pocket flashlight would be a good thing to EDC, even in the college-campus setting I live in. Sure It might not be needed all day-every day, but it sure would be nice to just have! "Better safe than sorry" I kind of look at it the same way as carrying a pocket knife.

I've decided to get a fenix light, since they are of much higher quality than the al-cheapo lights from big box stores, but also won't break the bank for a newbie such as myself. Probably either the P2D or P3D.

Anyway I'm not sure how helpful I'll be, I just started getting into flashlights a few days ago, very noob . But I hope to learn more and prehaps this will grow into a hobby!

This is a great combo for a minimalistic EDC:


LOD Q4 has the pocket clip bezel up and it clips on the inside of a pocket, so the Vic Rambler and thumb drive hang down in the pocket. This helps keep things off the bottom of the pocket (doesn't bunch up and create uncomfortable bulge), and the knife and thumb drive act like an anchor keeping everything firmly in place instead of slipping out. Swivel snaps keep everything spinning freely so it doesn't get tangled up, and makes for quick disconnect to use any one item by itself.

I don't hang anything from a belt most of the day, only from inside my pocket.

You should also look at the Fenix TK10(more of a flood beam)& the TK11(more of a spot)- 225 Lumens each. :welcome:

if You are still deciding: get one of the 2-cell models.
Sure, the 1 celled are (a tiny bit) smaller, but the 2-celler are way better

P3D, if You dont have any Ni-Mh Equipment already,
L2D, if You already have cells + charger (which is a: a very important part of the whole package, b: more expensive than Li-Ion charger)

First off, Welcome to CPF, I hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that makes you happy..

To that end...

Is there ANY chance, AT ALL, that you might EVER want to run your light on rechargeable cells?

If so, I suggest against the P1D and P2D with a passion, as they only work properly on 3.0V RCR123s (rechargeable CR123 size cells) or standard 3V CR123 primaries. The problem with the 3.0V RCR123s on the market is that they suffer from rather low energy density compared with alternatives. Ideally, if you really want a 1xCR123 powered light, but think you might run rechargeable someday, it would be best to select a light that will work correctly on the 3.7V verity of the RCR123, as it will have better runtime than the other rechargeable "cr123 size" cells that way.

As an alternative, many 1xAA powered lights available out there now are *nearly* as powerful as the 1xCR123 lights, and work GREAT on lithium primary AAs OR NIMH rechargeable cells. (recommend eneloops), And will also work "in a pinch" on alkaline cells for emergency situations. (handy as they are cheap and easy to fine) (best to stick to low modes when using alkalines to get the most out of the cells) The most noteworthy difference between a CR123 and a AA powered light is going to be that the CR123 lights will have slightly larger reflectors, so usually have slightly better throw (rule of thumb, not always the case, depends on what is being compared).
