Re: New \"unseen\" information on how Lasers work...
Lasermodifier:
I was not making reference to you in the slightest. I recieved about a million emails (rough guess there) from as many people, and have seen sites pop up with "l33t hacked las0r pointers guide and diagram". Some even went so far as to cross link the pictures from my domain. That was easy to fix, I just replaced the images they were cross linking with scary animal porn.
Im yelling about some other people, not you. Your guide is clean, clear, and concise. Sometimes there are slight technical omissions, however that rarely effects the scope of the document. I chose not to add resistor or circuit modification information on my site for three reasons.
1) Some sellers might take that information and make their own "hot-rod" laser modification company or sell a copy of the page minus my contact information on ebay. (Ive recieved one such email from a buyer on ebay who put the first couple sentances in google and found my site)
2) If the circuit information is made public knowledge leadlight may be forced to change it at a great expense, and much to the dismay of of people who love "tinkering" with these things. Or worse yet, they are pulled entirely from the market because some kid got 100mW out of his pointer for 4 seconds and blinded himself. In America most people are law-suit happy and they would sue everyone from the manufacturer to the Govt for "not protecting little waterhead". (This has already happened because of one such seller and I think you know who Im talking about here, and they have produced the "new" leadlights because of it.)
3) So no one gets hurt. A 5mW pointer is fine in my book, however a 30mW(3B) pointer with the safety interlocks of a 5mW(3A) pointer is just a bad idea. Most of the emails I have recieved are from people who should not be allowed to own a coffee maker, much less a laser pointer. My choice was purely based on covering my own backside.
Im glad you got interested in these things. And heres why you having the circuit modification information is not a problem:
You had to figure it out, you have gained respect for the item that could be potentially harmful and I don't see you doing something stupid because your not the type of person who would say "I just want to burn holes in stuff!! Gimme resistor charts and soldering gun! K?THX-BYE!"
Your comment:
"I'm sorry but whilst I have been spending bucks on lasers just to take thm apart reverse engineer and burn them up because of failed testing trial and error (why? because I enjoy it - I run a computer business in my spare time and my experience in electronics comes from that). "
Is the EXACT same thing I have been saying for a while. Im sure you recieve the same emails now that I have been getting, and if you choose to respond to them I hope you have far more patience that I do with these people.
I have been called a F-ing liar, a cheat, and a rather crude form of a equines backside for NOT giving them the information they wanted right when they wanted it. As im sure you have noticed, the old leadlight circuit is horribly simple to figure out, and what bothered me was the people who didnt want to tinker around to find out what to change. They just wanted a high power laser without any of the work.
