I was supprised not to see this around anywhere, but Shuji Nakamura was awarded more than $8 mil in he case against Nichia (he invented Blue LEDs and then Nichia made the money). It's a NY Times article, so a free registration is required /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif sorry.

I thought it was more like several hundred million he was going for... Perhaps he was only awarded 8.
 
It's not uncommon for the person who invents something, for a company, to receive no more than their normal pay (actually it traditional to get $1). It's considered part of the job. The idea being that the company takes the financial risk and therefore reaps the reward. Makes sense in some ways, but can also be applied unfairly as well.
