Went on a night hike Fri into sat. morning. Pretty cool time. We went up a trail that we've done before but you wouldnt have known it because it was totally defferent at night. We went up carter dome mountain in the white mountain range right next to wildcat mtn. It was around 830 when we entered and about 300 am when we got out. and then there was the long drive home. saturday was a wash. I think we came to 1/4 of a mile to the summit but turned around as the trail was getting to vertical and icy and we were lacking the propper crampons. the first section was fairly easy untill you pass to the hut and bang a left to the summit then the going gets rough. I'd say it was still a success. I'd guess we travelled about 7 miles round trip and gained roughly 3000 feet of ellivation over about 31/2 miles. Never done a night hike that intense before. I brought my saint minimus, e2l, and a p2d as a backup. (and a spares carrier). one thing worth noting about the minimus is the fact that as the battery is getting really low after dropping out of regulation if you turn it off at that point, it will not turn on again. you have to change the battery. So, in an emegency situation, without spares at that point, dont turn it off. Of course I had spares. Any way, beats sitting in a bar fri night.

no prob. ya I was kind of suprised at how the minimus drops out of regulation. with other lights like say an L4, it just gets dimmer and dimmer even if you turn it on and off. Not so with the minimus.

Cool story. Did you happen to take any pictures of your hike? I can't, for the life of me, convince my buddies to go hiking with me at night. They think I'm crazy.

I tried taking some pics, I have an olympus, its one of the water proof- freeze proof ones, but the night mode on it has a really long exposure time so you need a tri pod, or else your going to move the camera while its trying to get lite still. I know what you mean about people thinking you're crazy. Luckily I have 1 friend who is on the same wavelength as me. I wouldnt do half the stuff I do alone.

i have an olympus too, the Tough 6010, try using 'scene' setting and look for the 'fireworks' mode. I havent had a chance to try taking beamshots with that yet as i was just fooling around with my camera last night and saw that mode.

Nice story. Got to give some of my lights a night check in the woods soon.
