I have 4 of the Accupower "D"s:

The LSD properties seem to be good. I can't say if they deliver their rated power (don't have the equipment to measure), but I like them so far. I have had them for about a year now.

I use the MH-C808M to charge them. Nice charger.

Neither of the other 2 chargers you describe in your OP are capable of charging D size batteries.

Hi,

I actually just got that very same maha charger and those accupower d-cells (2 packs), and they work great so far.

I actually spent awhile hunting these down this afternoon, and found the best price here (no affiliation with seller):

here

The company is called "Bearwobble," and they have a web site, Amazon store, and e-Bay store. The e-Bay store appears to have the cheapest rate at $10 a pop with free shipping.

pobox, is that a high output radio and played loudly? Otherwise, if it's not a big, loud, boombox, a radio a normally doesn't use much current and alkaline D cells may be a better choice.

I've been using 7000mAh NiCd D cells for an 18 watt diving light and a boom box which uses a lot of current. The NiMH cells mteo found look nice and may be a better deal because I paid about the same for the lower capacity NiCd's.

I use these (tested to a true 10000mAH) at $5.51 each:

I bought 4 of these in late 2005. They seem to be holding up very well. They are showing a bigger drop in voltage under load, but they'll still hold 1.2 Volts @ 3 Amps. Not bad for 4 year old cells.

Will never go back to those. Last ones I had were actually C's in a D casing :(.

Yeah, I used to use those back when I used NiCds, at work. What a difference a "real" D size made. At the time, I think the NiCd D's were only 4000-4500mAh, but still.....

Dave

Edit: I don't think jayflash's D NiCd's are sub C or AA. There aren't any sub C or AA NiCd cells that are anywhere near 7000mAh, that I know of.

Yes, metlarules, those are the same. Mine are also two years old and work well under high drain ... so far.

The NiMH cells rmteo linked to are an even better deal if they hold up well and don't self discharge too quickly.

pobox, I was wondering about the load those D cells will see. Normal radios usually don't require too much current, unless they have several watts of audio output. A set of D cell alkies will last a couple years in some cases and adds less to the pollution stream than rechargeables which are seldom used.

I'm assuming you probably have a big boom box or radio and use it frequently and play it loudly; so rechargeables make sense in that case.

wish d nimh were around when i used my gettoblaster, years ago. i could pbly fill a pickup truck with all those dead alkies i threw out

Back in those "olden" days I used Radio Shack's 4Ah D NiCd cells. I even converted one boom box from 8 to 10 cell capacity. It actually played louder on batteries than plugged into AC. The power supply wasn't wimpy, either, and I added lager filter caps.

My wife played one of our large boom boxes for 8 - 10 hours every day at her job. Employees weren't allowed to plug radios in to the AC, so this was a great way to blast loud music almost for free. The newer NiCD 7 Ah cells have noticeably more capacity.

Not a big box but does have Sony's first generation MegaBass system which sucks added juice. It is one from their OUTBACK series from many moons ago and has rubber Armour like a pair of binoculars and old fashioned manual analog tuning to get stations in clearly. When I use it alkies work fairly well but at some point (usually away from stores) it gives up. With any rechargables I can start my outing with a good idea of how much time I will have. I might give those NiCD's a try. Any special break-in or care required with them? I am used to NiMH and Li-Ion technology now and have not had any for a while. Honestly I am still using rechargable Alkalines in it and have a couple sets in reserve. With these I must recharge after every use and ASAP. Most of the AA I have/had went bad with leagage issues but the D's seem to be holding up well. Intend to carry them as back-ups to the new cells.
