Howdy.

I've been lurking for a while, trying to get up to speed. I was somewhat aware that flashlight tech had improved dramatically over the last few years and I'm thinking of getting some flashlights as Christmas gifts this year. Specifically, my sister and brother-in-law have a big enough piece of property out in the country that they need some way to investigate when they hear noises at night. I haven't decided whether I'm going to get my brother-in-law something like the Stanley HID or some small tactical light that he could potentially mount to a rifle. If I do get the tactical light, I'll probably have to get him a battery and charger to go with it, so I have some thinking to do there. These forums have been very helpful in narrowing down the field. Thanks everyone.

As far as my own lights go, my good light was a 3D cell maglite incandescent. I just bought a $10 set of 2 no-name LED flashlights and one headlamp that will go in a junk drawer, and I also picked up a 2D cell maglite LED so I could get some 1st hand experience with a light with 114 lumens...something to benchmark all the numbers on this website against. I almost picked up the 180 lumen Dorcy, but I noticed that it has only half the throw of the maglight. So if I do look to tactical lights for my brother-in-law, Ill know to look for more than just a lumen number.

Also, that means I've got a 3D maglite body available for modding. I probably won't get around to that 'til next year if ever, but I'm reading posts and thinking about it. So thanks everyone. Keep up the good work.
