I just finished modding my QIII with a two stage switch.
It's 5am and I'm too tired to post pictures so they will come later.

I put in a 10 ohm resistor such that when you turn the tail cap
1/4 turn it kicks into low mode.

With fresh cr123's it draws 950mah
and on low, it draws 195ma - ample light for the middle of the night.

(Keep in mind I've already modded it with a TWOH - which give it
noticable increase in brightness.)

Also, the tailcap has some nice slight knobs (those of your who
have the QIII know) which makes it extremely easy to switch from
high to low with one hand. The clicky in the back still works.

I'm really happy with it. If only it were HA3 - it would replace
my arc4+.

BTW - this is the same one that I've polished down the reflector
for brighter and tighter hotspot and greater throw.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif now to bed...

show us pics of your mod....
This light with a two stage switch is going to be a first choice for many.

I just tested with fuly charged r123's that I'm selling (4.17v)
and on high it draws 1.25A (because it's using a TWOH emitter)
and one low it draws 270ma.

On rechargeables it should last two hours
On primaries, at 200ma it'll last 6-7 hours.

pictures forthcoming.
I may do these mods for folks after my ALX mods.

Great! Any way to provide momentary on? That's what I'll really miss on both. If so, I'll increase my group buy order and ship to you.

2dim: once they are on low, you can do momentary high but pressing
on the casing and not the button. Unfortunately the QIII's have
reverse momentary on. (turn on first to do momentary off).

Now here are the promised pictures.
I didn't take many pictures of the switch - it's basically based
on the kroll hi/lo mod except the 10 ohm resistor is not in the
spring but next to the switch inside and contacting the casing
(it's better /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

I'm not even going to think about modding this for anyone until I get
the ALX mods done /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

good idea, the QIII is a small pretty luxeon flashlight. It will make more uasge when put 2 stage awitch.

Good JoB.

First I took a conical grinder attachment for the dremel to the
aluminum reflector and grinded away at the finish - it took forever.
(If there is a next time I'll use some chemical instead)

Then I took jewelers polish and started polishing the surface with
a conical felt attachment for the dremel.

Finally I went back to the conical grinder and wrapped some paper
towels and put jewelers polish on it and lightly buffed it to a
reflective shine.

Sounds easy? Took me a couple hours.

It's been about a month and I looked for any oxidizing - strangely
it's still quite shiney.

Hi still new even though the icon says flashaholic lol but anyway .. I am gonna get one of these Q-III's and want to know what is this>(Keep in mind I've already modded it with a TWOH - which give it
noticable increase in brightness) and can I buy something like this to put in mine when i get it to give it that kind of output .. I know about polishing the reflectors .. I did the same for my PentagonLight X2 and it gave some artfacts but the throw is is alot farther .. I used dremel with conical bit and magic metal polish ( purchased at local AutoZone in the mag and wheel polish section for $2.79 or so) that has a silicon to prevent it from oxidizing near as fast and so far it is still shiny as a mirror... anyway thanks for the tips and do you sale the r123's? mentioned for running this Q-III thanks, let me know Jeff

I don't see the pix either. (server must be down?)

Paypal ready for the switch mod. Maybe emitter too.

hello 4sevens could you check your server I'd really like to see those pictures they've been down for a few days now...

The server will be down for a few days - sorry. A 250gb drive
we bought died within 6 months. I'm never buying a Maxtor again.

By the way, I just got 100 two stage switches in the mail the other
day. It's the click-high, click-off, click-low, click-off type.

Watch this thread for upgrade offerings.

thanks
david
