Is it ok to use lithium grease on rubber o-rings?

EDIT: I am referring to flashlight o-rings.

Light, white lithium grease maybe, certainly not automotive grease. Petroleum jelly or regular white grease is usually the best.

Will automotive grease swell or damage the rubber, or is it because automotive grease just too messy?

I believe auto grease is petroleum based which is bad for o-rings. Use only 100% lithium grease. You can get it at dive shops or also hardware stores. It comes in small plastic colored containers or in tubes in the plumbing section.

I was using the search function, appearently the best stuff is nyogel. But, if I only wanted to use 1 type of lube on both the o-ring and screw, which one do I buy?

I bought a small container of silicone grease for O-rings. It was in the plumbing section of my local Home Depot.
