Old Battery

On Christmas day, my Dad showed me an old battery he had and I thought some of you might like to see it.

That is great! A collectible. How does it compare in size to a "D" cell. What voltage is it? Do you know what it was made of inside?

looks like a d cell.
is it dead?
some still have close to 1.5v but are dry enough to be useless.
save for display.

I think it was a D cell. I'll see if it has any juice left next time I visit.

There was a 1940 ad for that very battery on eBay - ended Nov 08. It didn't sell. It would make a nice addition to the battery, if your dad's at all into collecting batteries, that is.

And I found an enegizer PDF for a no 950 battery. This couldn't be the same one, could it? It's referred to as "Classic", though. It even has discharge graphs.

The battery in the PDF is a "D" size 1.5 V made from Zinc-Manganese Dioxide (Zn/Mn0 )and has plastic laminated paper. I can't see them doing a data sheet for a 1940s battery, maybe the same type of battery is still available and this is the current one that they sell?

It says they sell 1 billion batteries every year. If those are primary cells and that's just one manufacturer, that's an awful lot of waste going into landfill. i can't even imagine 1 billion batteries in a large pile. oo:

That R-201 flashlight is pretty cool! Wonder if it's available in LED?
