On Christmas day, my Dad showed me an old battery he had and I thought some of you might like to see it.

That is great! A collectible. How does it compare in size to a "D" cell. What voltage is it? Do you know what it was made of inside?

looks like a d cell.
is it dead?
some still have close to 1.5v but are dry enough to be useless.
save for display.

There was a 1940 ad for that very battery on eBay - ended Nov 08. It didn't sell. It would make a nice addition to the battery, if your dad's at all into collecting batteries, that is.

And I found an enegizer PDF for a no 950 battery. This couldn't be the same one, could it? It's referred to as "Classic", though. It even has discharge graphs.

The battery in the PDF is a "D" size 1.5 V made from Zinc-Manganese Dioxide (Zn/Mn0 )and has plastic laminated paper. I can't see them doing a data sheet for a 1940s battery, maybe the same type of battery is still available and this is the current one that they sell?

yep... 950 did turn out to be the D's we see today

It says they sell 1 billion batteries every year. If those are primary cells and that's just one manufacturer, that's an awful lot of waste going into landfill. i can't even imagine 1 billion batteries in a large pile. :eek:oo:

That R-201 flashlight is pretty cool! Wonder if it's available in LED?
