Not sure if this is the right forum, but will give it a try.

Anyone have any experience with Organic LEDs? I believe they were going to be used in small display devices like PDAs, cell phone displays, car audio and maybe even pocket tvs and laptops.

Just wondering. I have not heard anything about them in a long time, but at times read about that type of display in an auto audio magazine.

I've been following them for awhile. Very interesting technology, self-emitting with quick turn-on/turn-off time, but they're still having trouble with the lifetime of the displays as well as their serious vulnerability to moisture damage.

I know before this made the news HP or some ink company had a way to print LEDs that you could use or even print a battery using special ink. Never heard much on that either.

A former co-worker of mine claims to hold a patent of sorts on printing LEDs. I've never bothered to look it up.

OLEDs work fine, but are subject to extrernal contamination. I seem to recall that even the best manufacturing methods can only produce arrays with ~4 years lifespan.

I believe that there is a Kodak digital camera on the market with an OLED display. The resolution and pixel density are exceptionally high, and I believe that it's brighter than conventional backlit LCD displays.

I had a motorola Timeport cell phone that had an OLED display. It worked pretty well except for direct sunlight. It could get hard to see under real bright lights.

The display was cool, as it had a black background with green and orange/red pixels. In most cases it was much easier to see without my glasses than a regular LCD. The phone was only available for about 2 years. I've since given it to a family member and bought an LG for the wireless data communications. She's still using it.

If you mean the Timeport p8767, I don't know if that was OLED - I know it was an LED display of some sort, however, and that it was damned bright and easy to read in the dark... but the reception was still soso, IMO. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It was pretty useful in its time, though.

I find LCD flat panel computer monitors and laptop displays easier to see with my vision problem. Sounds like that cell phone would be great for me. I have just a standard grey scale one with green LED backlights or should I say front lights and its worthless to help me see it.
