Re: Omron DR-LED\'s

Apparently these are 8.5 mm dia. DR-LEDs with a viewing angle of 17 degrees. K-rank would be the brightest at 10000+ mcd , J-rank is 5600-20000 mcd.

Re: Omron DR-LED\'s

In that case, it's pathetic.... Nichia has 9000+ mcd @ 20 degrees and that's without reflection. Given light loses through epoxy and through reflector cup, you should still get at least 15000 + mcd @ 20 degrees from a good white LED. But no... they gave a 10K + mcd one @ 17 degrees instead.... They got more catching up to do.... a lot more...

J rank might give it a bit of saving grace. But oh well.... with such big die... they should have been able to pump up the power to increase the brightness....

Re: Omron DR-LED\'s

Nerd,
I have sent a few emails back and forth with the assistant manager of Nichia here in the states. He told me that Nichia does use an internal reflector in their white LEDs by means of a two part process in the construction of the dies housings. I tried to post a link to that post but once again I have had no luck with that. the post is listed under LED, Electroluminescent and Lasers, Does this make sense or does this make sense or not?

Hey thanks for the help Lee. I think I know what I am doing wrong with linking of posts now.

Re: Omron DR-LED\'s

Ah Wylie, Nichia does reflect their light, but only in 1 side I think. This DR-Omron LED is suppose to reflect from both top and bottom of the chip. So it's suppose to be double brightness...

Re: Omron DR-LED\'s

Yes I have seen the DR's and have taken as close a look as possible with the Internet anyway. I have come to the conclusion I am going to let someone review them before I spend any money on them. By the way I have just started my next project a Bat winged low dome 1 watt on a three C diet with some optics I have been toying around with

. If everything works out right I may just have a major lux cooker here. After that I have a three AAA bat bat winged 1 watt in the works this will be a reel trick as the space is very limited so it is an ify thing right now and I still have some optics to pull together for this one.

**envy...** If only I have a LS to play around with.... Keep up the good work and your imagination.

Re: Omron DR-LED\'s

I believe HP introduced "transparent substrate" (LEDs that emit from both
sides, and have associated reflectors incorporated into the leadframe)
quite a few years ago. So perhaps this isn't so much "new" as just "new for
omron." As old technology, you might have to hunt for info as to whether
any particular LED used this or not...

(I DON'T recall this being used in a high-power LED package before, so
perhaps there is something new to the omron announcement...)
