I want to mod out my sureifre 6p with a 1W Luxeon but do not know how to go about it. Do I need something to overdrive the Luxeon? How about a heatsink? Optics? Could any fellow CPF`r enlighten me as to what I will need for this mod and how to go about it? I am going to (hopefully) use the origional 6p head. Would this be a problem for a heatsink and a 1W Luxeon? Any knowledge imparted would be greatly appreciated. -Frank

A very simple solution is a eight or so ohm, two watt resistor in series with the LS. This will drive a typical one to 325 mA (spec) with fresh (3.0 Volt) cells. Expect about four hours of fairly constant light.

You should figure out a way to get the heat into the reflector and body of the light, or go to a larger resistor for less light and heat and longer runtime.

why not use a E2e with KL1, this is basically what you are trying to build AND it is regulated .... but then I am no modder but a mere consumer.
maybe you'd like to add one of those cool driver boards Wayne offers?

if you want to mod a 6P with a luxeon, I would suggest getting a KL3 and then modding this. I've seen LA's modded to accept a luxeon, but I would think that you would have a heat problem using this method. For a true, run it as long as you like, LED mod, get the KL3, order a Fraen LP optic from Elektrolumens (or use the NX05 that came with it for that matter), get a couple of Q3J's from Hotbeam in B/S/T (he only sells a minimum of two), and send it all off to someone like CM to swap the luxeon and overdrive to 700mA. You won't believe the results. Very bright with lots of throw and around a 2 hour runtime. You'll also be able to go back and forth between the incand and the KL3.

Thanks for the information guys. I like the compactness of the 6p so I want to stick with the origional 6p body and head ( seeing as this is my first surefire) . I have the kl3 head and was fairly disappointed with the amount of light it puts out ( with a violet tint no less) and heard that it was possible to swap it out with a 1W or dare I say-5Wluxeon? I would probably get the kl3 head modded out as well as the origional 6p head seeing as the kl3 totally throws off the weight and feel of the 6p.I`ll shoot CM a message and see if he would mod the kl3 for me. thanks again guys
