I have a very dark 2-car parking pad that I'd like to illuminate with a motion sensing security light. The area is about 500 sq-ft, and is walled in on 3 sides in a 'U' shape. I'm planning to mount the light on one side of the 'U' so that it faces the other side and doesn't shine into my neighbor's window across the alley. I'm looking at the Steinel HS 150 UltraEYE Halogen Sensor Light http://www.steinel.net/products/sensors/halogenflood.cfm (pictured below). What I like about this one is that it has a manual override: You can turn off motion sensing and have it stay on as general lighting by flipping the light switch a couple times (for BBQs, working on the car, etc.).
I'm trying to decide between the 150-watt version and the 300-watt version. Is there a formula/guideline/recommendation for lumens per square foot when dealing with outdoor lighting? I'd rather not be a beacon seen miles away, but I also don't want it to be too dim to be useful. Any help would be appreciated!
