Hi ... I'm brand spankin' new here - what a great site.

I've been reading posts for the last week or so with regard to P7 M#g mods. I have several D-3/4 M#gs that I'd like to convert and was wondering if anyone makes a kit for this mod? Sadly, I have limited skills and no real tools to speak of, except duct tape and pliers:twothumbs

Thanks in advance for the help.

John H.

A 3 cell mod is relatively easy. Get a heatsink, the LED, a pair of wires, and thermal epoxy. You don't need a circuit for this. I don't recall any kits, but the parts aren't hard to find.

Here, this thread could help.

Thanks Gunner12,

What I’m looking for is a new flashlight for work – I sell, besides commercial real estate, large industrial buildings. One of my buildings was vandalized here a few weeks ago and I need something a lot better (brighter) than the several 3 or 4 D-cell MagLites I now own.

It’s a safety issue as well.

I’ve read about Mag conversions, and the like (very interesting). But I don’t really have the skill sets or the tools for even a simple soldering job.

What I really think I need is a basic, powerful light that can span 300 –400 linear feet of the typical max length of a warehouse – and an LED would be my preference, too.

Price-wise, probably a $100 or so, at the high end.

Any thoughts, with regard to good all around light.....thanks in advance for the help.

Cheers,
John H.

If it's for work, why not buy one of the scratch-n-dent EDP-71's over in the market place.

Super bright and already done for you.

I e-mailed them, and they still have more.

I'm considering it myself because the cost of a P7 or MCE LED plus a good driver is at least that much.

Granted, the satisfaction factor isn't there, but you can work on that later. :grin2:

The easiest would be to find a Malkoff P7 Mag drop-in. They come up for sale sometimes. Maybe you can make a thread in the WTB section of cpfmarketplace.com.

I don't believe Malkoff is making these anymore. You could always call or email him and ask. I believe they sold for around $125 new.

There is also a forum member in the B/S/T section that is making XPG Mag complete lights for $60 shipped. It should have roughly half the output of a P7.

Thanks for the replies.

After rethinking this, and reading more reviews, I decided to go with a mainstream brand (rather than hack my Mags) and called Matt at Battery Junction, based on his publicity here. Their staff pick was the Olight M20 and I asked for advice, based on my criteria, on the M20 vs. M21 Olight.

There again, this is a light for my work indoors selling industrial buildings without indoor lighting that may be as much as 450-500 linear feet in length.

Here is Matt’s reply (I hope I am not out of line by posting this w/ out his prior consent).

""Hi John,

The M20's sole advantage is 'throw' it can put out it's beam slightly
further but at a shorter distance the M21 will put more light at a given
distance.

Given that much of your usage will be indoors I'd definitely go with the
M21. Also, the M21 has plenty of 'throw' it's just slightly less than
the M20's.

The M21 is not just tons brighter than your Maglite - it's also MUCH
smaller and lighter.

Best regards,
Matt””

Based on Matt’s comments I plan to order the M21 from him on Friday. I was actually hoping he’d say the M20 was better for my needs because of the M20 Holiday Gift Set.

At any rate, the main deciding factors for me were:

A…..Great reviews of the M20 (the M21 is pretty new at this point)
B…..Max 500 lumens
C…..Powered by: 2 x CR123A -- 2 x RCR123A --1 x 18650 batteries
D….Lighter than the Mag
E…..and, well, it just looks really COOL, too
