Well what battery is "best" is sort of wide open. In my 3 SSC P7 3D Mag mod I drive it with either 9 AA Eneloops or 3 lithium ion cells. These days I am really
partial to batteryspace LiMnNi Rechargeable 4000 mAh 26650 cells.

Happy Mods!

im going with the least amount of batteries as i can

so like 3x 18650

or iv read 4x 14670 im just not sure what all can fit in a mag if i have it bored out to make them fit

depends what size mag we talking about,

i have 4d with 3xp7 i run it on 6 18650 3s2p, imo using 3 cells is a waste of space, i did need to dual bore it to fit 6 cells.
17500\17650 fit 2side by side without borring out, but their capacity is smaller.
i also have 12 aa rechargeable, in 12aa 4d holder, as a spare, but 6x18650 give me very good run time, so i never had to use aa's thou i did test run, they work just fine.
for 3d mag rin 9 AA's rechargeables, or 9 lithium's AA, for 2d the best would be to dual bore it and use 4x18500, or tri bore it and use 6 17500, or you fit 12 a123 cells in 6s2p.
you can also use 26500, 4 in 3d, and 3 in 2d. but i wouldn't use them in your case, they are good for high draw, you wont have it in 3xp7, max you will have 3amps, that is not much, using 2 18650 side by side will give you about 5ah capacity,(vs 2'3ah) in the space a bit longer than 26500 takes. even 2 18500 will give you about 3ah vs 2,3ah in the same space.

if you had hotwire with 10 amps draw that would be different story

it is considered a lot safer to use protected li ions, i agree, but i use unprotected cells in all my lights, i just replace\recharge before the light goes really dim. you just got to develop the feel for cells, to stop using them before it is too discharged. so far i didn't kill any cells
