:party:PF11! Flashaholic Get Together: NJ, NY, PA, CT Area +
PF11 is the 11th edition of a flashaholic get together in Califon, NJ. It's open to anyone who would like to attend.

The tradition lives on! Based on the success of the past 10 PF events, it's time for PhotonFest 11!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, Oct. 18th! Well, those of you who were at any of the first 10 PF's know what to expect. For those of you who were not, here is a run down:

Date: Saturday Oct. 18th
Start Time: High Noon (12:00PM)
End Time: after dark, possibly Sunday AM, or you may stay at Scott's home for the night and leave the next day (see details below).

PF11 will be at the usual place, the home of Scott (milkyspit) in Califon, NJ. Please PM Scott for exact directions.
We usually start with a casual meet and greet. Of course, the lights come out right away for a show and tell, and those who can't wait for the dark head into Scott's basement where it's dark. :candle:

 Everyone is asked to bring some small snack on which to nibble: a bag of tortilla chips, a flavorful dip, potato chips, pretzels, popcorn, a bottle of soda, water or other beverage, cookies, candy, fruit..... whatever!

:thanks: An additional tradition has been that those who want to bring small give-aways for everyone, may do so. Popular items in the past have been keychain lights, penlights, keyrings, lanyards, etc. These little inexpensive "give-aways" are always appreciated. One year, CPF member Solstice made a cool drawing commemorating the event, and gave copies to everyone. Someone else provided blank name tags for all of us to stick on a shirt. It's better than saying "hey you!" A few guys offered flashlight mods that went bad, in the hope that a new owner could make use of them.

 It has become a bit of a tradition that items are donated for a raffle. The cool thing is that while some attendees of the event bring items for the raffle, quite often those who could not attend, but want to support our event, often mail stuff out or send it along with someone who is coming.

:sold: Additionally, many of us will have items for sale or trade. So bring some extra cash money ($$).

Something else that is kinda cool is Stan's Segway. If you don't know what a Segway is, it's that cool electric scooter thing with two wheels, you stand on and cruise around. Stan is always willing to give a quick lesson and let those who want to have a neat experience, try it out. Stan, if you can't make it this year can you just ship the Segway out? :lolsign:

At some point, we usually get some food for dinner to break up the day. For the sake of simplicity, we usually order several pizza pies with a variety of toppings. In this way, everybody will have something that they like to eat on top of their pizza slices!

 Of course, there is the mysterious Field of Darkness across from Scott's house, which contains a black hole that just eats up light before you can reach the tree line quite a distance away. For years many had tried, and only a few lights were able to illuminate the tree line.

Not to be overlooked, is the annual trek (about a 3/4 mile walk) to the infamous quarry. It is an abandoned limestone rock quarry, which is used as a police shooting range.....but not when we will be there!!! :xyxgun: Anyway, we head into the dark reaches of the quarry, which gives an interesting backdrop for testing our lights.

In the past, some CPF members from the West Coast who could not attend, sent out some of their cool mods for us to examine. Hopefully, that will happen again.

 So much goes on there is no way I can mention it all or give credit to everyone who has helped make PhotonFest what it is today. Thanks to everyone who has helped make the PF events such a success, and to help encourage me to create FCW (Flashaholic Camping Weekend) a spin off event, just like a PF but for a whole weekend, outside in the woods, where it's dark, and we have camp fires and all the good fun stuff that goes along with camping!

Ok back to PF11... Of course, everyone is encouraged to bring as many lights with them as they can. What one person may think is a common light, another person may contemplate buying and will be very happy to have a personal hands-on review. :twothumbs

Scott has suggested that anyone who wants to sleep over, is welcome to do so. Sleeping arrangements are as follows: You may sleep on the couches or on the floor in his living room. You may bring your tent and camp out in his backyard. :sleepy:

I'm sure that this date will work out great for some, and not so great for others. I'm sorry for those who will not be able to make it. It is virtually impossible to coordinate the perfect date for everyone.

Most of the event will have a flexible time frame in order to ensure that those who want to see the quarry can do so at a reasonable hour. But we have discovered that a little regimentation has worked better than having the day's worth of activities proceed on a random basis. The following is the schedule of events that made PF10 the best gathering of them all:

ORDER PIZZA - 5:45
GROUP PHOTO - 7:45
RAFFLE TIME - 8:00
BLACK HOLE 9:00
QUARRY TIME 9:30

Regarding our eating manners, the only request made by our host Scott is that we all clean up after ourselves, and leave his home in good condition. That way, his wife will let us keep coming back for more!!! Thanks in advance to his understanding wife Heather, and his children for letting us invade their home and turn it into our playground for a night. :)

Well, that's all for now. Hope to see you there!

I've got the (expiring) "miles" on American and Untied, and am retiring 9/30! :D Your worst nightmare Scott! :D Is there an Inn I would be able to crash at in the Califon area? (Last two visits, I had to rush things!)

Larry,
Finally, a firm commitment to attend. Bravo, denizen of the Left Coast!

When I read that you are about to retire, I smiled from ear to ear. Remember that you will no longer be working for "the man", and you will be doing anything you please from 9/30 "onward!". Enjoy it, whatever you do!

Sam,
Very good! Does that mean that you and Heidi will not be attending?.....meaning that we will have another ten slices of pizza to share among the other attendees? :naughty:

you can't mean that! besides, we would just be a little late, the ws ends about 1pm, one hour on the train ride back home, about 4 hours on the crossbronx, and 2 hours after crossing the cross bronx!
just wait for us before ordering the pizzas. we just wont make it for high noon.
afternoon maybe.
dont think we missed pf9 or 7. just a bit late.
only time i miss these are the yankee games. doubt the yankees ever play a weekend playoff game!

Oh Sam, the Yanks won't be in the playoffs this year, they'll be getting beaten by the Rays and the Sox:nana:

Sam,
You silly boy! Would I ever be mean to you or Heidi in that way, or any other way? NOOOOOO, and I say so "emphatically!" But management does require that you pay a "late fee" for your tardiness!! Either that, or you bring an ample supply of pork soup dumplings and share you rich Chinese culture with all of us Yanks.

Per your request, all of us will wait for the two of you before ordering the pizza pies, listening to our hungry stomachs
grumbling in unisson!

I don't recall if you missed PF7/PF9. Are you the Asian guy with blond hair, blue eyes and a 6'-6" stature? I vaguely remember you!

Looking forward to seeing you, Heidi, and your new toys.

it's going to be the angels vs who cares in the nl.
angels looks to go all the way this year!

but the playoffs will be around that time. the alcs. that's if the yankees make it past the alds!

Are you TRYING to get yourself banished from PF11? :xyxgun:  :banned:

Everybody knows PF11 is an equal-tolerance baseball zone. As long as you root for the Yankees.

Some Thoughts, Ground Rules, and Meaningless Pontifications

Let's all hope for good weather. The attendance at the past couple events has been at about the limit of what our poor old house can hold! Good weather at PF10 in particular was key in that some folks were able to enjoy the nice outdoor weather, so at any given time the number of attendees actually IN the house was significant, but still okay.

CONTINGENCY PLAN: As we approach the event, it's possible the headcount and/or weather forecast may force our hand as to coming up with some alternate arrangements. Perhaps we could borrow or rent one of those big tarps or tents for outside... maybe the orchard next door might allow use of its facilities (big building and parking lot)... maybe we clear some space in the garage so folks can be in there as well... to be honest, I have no idea what we would do, but am open to suggestions.

BEVERAGE POLICY: Given the family nature of the event (among others, my own family! boys 8, 6, and 3) as well as the higher attendance we tend to have these days, I'm continuing the no-alcohol policy we've had for the past couple events. I want to thank everyone for being so good with that since I've had such a policy, it means a lot.

THANKS FOR THE CONTRIBUTIONS! Data (if memory serves) started a semi-covert collection jar at PF10, into which a number of you contributed some funds... these were very well received! I can report the effort went a LONG way toward preserving domestic bliss in the Milky home and making it easier to get the big boss's buy-in for continuing the event. Among other things, the funds went toward steam cleaning the carpet for the first time in many years, as well as various household odds and ends. Thank you so much to all who contributed, and thank you to Data for being such a sneaky and benevolent soul! Bless you, everyone.

Larry, I've been waiting for this day for a long time. Okay, not really... but HAVE been looking forward to your return! As for accommodations, there are various inns and hotels in the general area. Among the more interesting is a fairly new bad and breakfast that's about 1/2 mile north of our home, and on the same road. Seems like that would be simplicity itself! I don't know much about the place but it looks nice from the outside... send me email or PM and I'll get you their name and phone number.

You're welcome to catch some zzz's at our place, too, if you wish... we offer reasonable rates (free) though you need to be comfortable with sleeping bag, cot, tent, treehouse, or similar sleeping arrangement. Seriously, it's not problem from this end if that's what you want to do.
