Pilas for my HID Mag mod?

FINALLY! After about a month of on and off work on my HID mag project, it is finally done. I've made battery holders for 8AA cells and it works just fine. This is my VERY FIRST mod EVER...so i'm somewhat proud of myself. I've recieved help from many of you on the CPF so i thank you so much!



I'm looking for a better way to power this light. with 8AA NiMH, the ballast only recieves ~10.8 volts, which is underdriving the bulb. at 10.8 volts, the light output is much bluer and slightly but noticebly dimmer than being run at 12V. Even when Alkaline cells are putting out 11+ volts, they are brighter than the NiMH at 10.6-10.8V and lower.

Here's what i want to do: I want to use the new rechargeabel Li-Ion 123 cells that are on pre-sale with JSBurly. I've been reading that each cell outputs about 4.1-4.2V off the charger. Here are my questions.

Since 3 cells can adequately power the ballast, [10.8V total @ 3.6V per cell or 12.6V @ 4.2V per cell]...
...Can the supplied charger charge cells individually or only in pairs?

...If the charger can only charge in pairs, will A MAHA 777+ charger charge these cells?

...is 4.2V the nominal voltage of these cells (compared to 1.2V with NiMH)?

...If so, will my desired operating range (11V-12.6V) be sustained for a good period of time? (at least 5-10 minutes)
NiMH fresh off the charger give me about 10.8V, but soon reach 10.2 down to 9.8V, which, by then is underdriving the ballast even more. I need these Li-ion battery to sustain their total voltage near 10.8-12.6V to give me the brightest light possible and to justify the cost. If they will quickly slump to less than 10V then I might as well stick with 8AA NiMH.

...also, i hear these cells have a capacity of about 800mah. From my knowledge of Lithium cells, even though the capacity is smaller, the seem to outlast higher capacity cells (like Alk. and NiMH) at the same voltage. I get about 1 hour with 8AA NiMH cells...what can i expect from these 800mah Li-ion cells?

So...what do you think?

Should I enter this mod in the contest? This is my first mod and i never sold one...so it would be classified as Class 2 right?

However, I did have a machine shop bore out the mag, so i didn't exactly use common tools to complete the mod. ALthough, all i used after that was a soldering gun and a Dremel.

Do i qualify?

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question about the batteries.
 
I don't think 3 of 123 Li-Ion will power up the light for reasonable run time unless you use 3 pack of (3x123) connected in parallel (11.1 volt at 2400mAh. I have done similar mod using 3 row of 2/3A size which has same diameter of 123 (17mm). In this case you will need some machinist help.

If 3 123 Li-Ion won't work, then that's all i need to hear to scrap that idea. I can probably fit 2 rows side by side in parallel, but even that will give me ~1600mAh. What do you think about that configuration? I'm not sure of the discharge characteristics of Li-Ion, so my questions may sound a little dumb.

Anyway, 3 rows sound really good, but I REALLY don't want to mess around too much with what i have already. Sending it to a metal shop to get the battery tube modified just sounds like too much trouble for 1 more Volt.

I don't know about the JSBurly charger, but I use my Maha 777-Plus2 to charge bare 18650s/17670s. It seems to like them fine. I just had to jury rig a cradle to hold the single cell. If you have a holder, then you should be good to go.
 
The reason I think 3 123 Li-Ion will not work is because of voltage drop. Pulling about 1 amp out of 800 mAh (if 800 is true) will drop voltage of cell to lower than what you need.
2 row of 3 123 in parallel may work with short run time.
2 row of 3 150S will give you some more run time in 3D flashlight but cost more $ too.

My suggestion for getting an extra volt would be to try out a couple other brands of nimh batteries 1st. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I have noticed a small diffence in voltage from brand to brand with the same Vanson smart chargers I use. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If the body can be made longer than use the 18650 bare cells with 2200mah or use 3 pcs if Pila 168s with 1600mah. If the ballast have a low voltage cutoff of about 9v then the barecells can be used, if not the Pila with the overdischarge cirkut is the way to go. The length if the 18650 is 65mm and the Pila is 67mm. Both are 19.5mm dia. If you want slimmer cells the Pila 168a and 17670 barecell is 18.5 mm dia. I use the 17670 in the E2e with KL4 head. If you do get the Pila system CO NOT CHARGE THE BARECELLS WITH THE PILA CHARGER. They will kill the barecells. The pila charger is only meant for the Pila or Wolfeyes li-ion batts.
