I have SEVERAL Pila cells, and the wrapping is coming off of them. I'm sure that others have experienced this, what did you do?

These cells are a tight fit in E series lights as it is, and shrink wrap adds too much girth.

hm, mine have been fine, I did cut one layer off one of my cells, to see if it would fit in a Arc LS 2AA pack I bored out, (it still didnt) there was another Pila lable under it.

I cut alittle too deep, and the second lable had a slit in it, I used clear scotch tape on it.

Would be nice to fine a source for THIN shrink wrap though.

If you're looking for really thin replacement heatshrink you can try a good Hobbystore - ask for Helicopter blade shrink. I have some 17670 cells that don't have the factory shrink all of the way to the negative end, I was able to add blade shrink to the cell with no fit problems. As long as you can get the correct size it shouldn't be any thicker then the original shrink labels many cells include.

Hi Tony!
You read my mind because I was actually going to post this question myself! All my Pila cells have rips in them from trying to squeeze them into tight fitting lights. The Pilas like Jon's rechargeable 123's sure have crappy wrappings. I noticed that the Pila's do have another wrapper underneath the outer one. I guess we'll have to try and carefully take the outer wrapper off. I thought about taking BOTH wrappers off and rewrapping them with clear tape but sometimes if the light gets hot enough, the glue from the tape will seep out. If anyone has a better solution, please let us know.

I will ask the Pila guys about this. I have not myself unwrapped a Pila battery. Are the wrappers needed at all. I guess I need to disect one and find out myself.

Thanks Jon and please let us know! I too was wondering if they would be safe with no wrappings at all and it would be great if they were.

I'm sure there's a good reason for the wrappings. Would you spend all that extra money to include more material on your product if it didn't actually do anything except burn your $$$'s?

Not I.

I say there's a good reason for it and by removing one or two layers would have some sort of possible negative effect to both battery and flashlight.

Hopefully we will hear from Jon about this.

I think Jon doesn't know either or he wouldn't be disecting one just to try and find out.

I have sent off an email to find out....I hope I hear back soon. I will do the surgery on sunday when I have time to do it.

I gots two people I can put into nurse uniforms....I don't know if they can help me much if things go bad though

Careful with the label removal, there is a connection (small copper strip) running from the positive terminal down to the protection circiut on the bottom, you don't want to mess that up! That needs to stay insulated from the body of the cell and from the flashlight's body, otherwise something bad will occur... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That's it. I'm going to invent a proprietary sized li-on battery (bare cell) with smart charger, with the proprietary light that will be built around it having a built-in cutoff in its circuit (much as the LH does now) so that the battery itself is as pure and simple in design as possible (as utterly bare, and dumb, as a cell can get).

And being proprietarily sized, it would not fit in any standard dumb charger (or dumb FLASHLIGHT) and thus could not be used/abused in an unintended manner - so no kabooming nor overdraining.

Whatsay, Jon?

I gots to go to sleep now (and dream of you-know-who in a nurse's uniform...) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

G'night all...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Make it non-removable (not without extensive tooling) and build a charge-in-place system and WE HAVE A WINNAAAAAARRR! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have ten Pila 168S and in order to get them to fit in Aleph powerpacks I removed the label. Underneath was a Copia label!

I have not got an email back from them on this issue. I will send the question again.

If your trying to get a civil answer from the Pila person, Jennifer Wong? Lotsaluck! If you haven't dealt with her yet, your lucky. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You must have been very rude to her then Bill.

I have met her and been in touch with her constantly over the past year and will bear witness to her good character and nature.

You sir should be careful of Mr Karma.
