Please recommend a SIMPLE 2xAA flashlight

Candle Power Forums

Help Support Candle Power:

It does have 2 power levels though, and the 145 lumens is stretching it a bit. More like 90.

hmm ITP c8t. 2aa under 40. its simple.no strike bezels. click on. twist head to ramp up or down, tighten it to lock in to "correct output". very simple. everyone has learned to use it in a flash. even granma. :)

and you can buy c7 body to it and use it as a 1AA light too. (or buy the itp c7 if you end up liking 1aa more.

the c8t is my nightstand light. because it can go very low and then easy to loosen the head to make it steadily increase output. (much more linear ramping than in my d10) but it is not a very floody light.

also itp eos might be good option as smaller purse/keychain light.. very small and uses aaa.. also simple to use, just twist it on.

others to think about.. the soon to be released itp sc series. the romisen n3 and g2 in the bluish gray color are good cheap options too. and now available with warm tint leds!

but the maglite led is not a bad choice to normal people either.

How about a Peak 2AA Baltic or Pacific? Single mode only, available in several different power levels. The Peak website is confusing, but call & talk to Robyn or Curt, & they will get you what you need. The price may be a little higher than you want, but the build quality is outstanding, and they are American made. Just my $.02. The brass Peaks are awsome! Gotta have one!

I like the Nitecore D20. 2xAA batteries, variable brightness, easy to use. By easy to use, I mean my 9 yr old daughter knows how to brighten and dim it. Got it from 4 Sevens. Solid little light comes with pocket clip and lanyard. Used it while trick-or-treating and it worked great. Brighter than the 2D M*glites everyone else was carrying around, and didn't dim as it got cooler (colder) out during the evening. Here's the D20:

If you want a cute light, you may want to consider a Nitecore D10 (shown on the left):

It uses 1 AA battery, comes with a lanyard, has the same interface as the D20 (push & hold to brighten, push & hold to dim), and it'll withstand a purse. I carry mine at work, and it's a bright, rock-solid reliable light that has no visible wear even after after banging around in a pocket full of keys.

+1 for getting her a mini-mag in her favorite color. Just get an incan and put a Terralux TLE-5EX into it. And put a Nite Ize IQ switch on the tail, when she head-stands the light the tiny led in the tail switch will wink so she can find it in the dark.

This is my wife's nightstand EDC, she loves it. The switch is simple on-off, until she learns to click rapidly and discovers the extra levels (hi-med-low-beacon).

You can get a TLE-5EX + IQ switch package deal on ebay for $26 shipped.

RWT1405 - finally someone mentions the Streamlight 2AA LED !!!!

Simple, reliable, and inexpensive.

I have been a huge Streamlight fan for 5 years now.

Go to your nearest Target and look at what they have. I especially like the Lifegear 1aa 1watt they have. The package says 80 lumens but that would probably be at the emitter. More like 50 or so. It has great runtime and takes 3 or 4 hours to become noticable weaker. Usable for 6-7 hours before changing batteries. I like that it doesn't suddenly just "go out" on you. It's a bit bigger than many single aa's and so feels good in the hand, not like you're about to loose it! Put one of the maglight rubber anti-roll heads on it and it stands really well. You'll have to put a couple turns of electrical tape around the head first as the anti-roll head is exactly too big to stay on by it's self. You can't see the tape after you put the head on. I thought about JB weld or something similar, but the ele. tape is working great! It's very simple to operate. Click "on", click "off".

It's only 19 dollars! Less if it's on sale!

My wife took mine!

I'd say go with one of the new Preons from 47.

You can lego them so she can have it clicky or twisty, clip or keyring, and all the extra strobe/flash functions have to be specifically accessed so they'll never get in the way.

I was planning on getting a Quark AA as my new EDC light but am getting a Preon kit instead. The 2x AAA body puts out almost as much light as the Quark AA2, is slimmer, lighter, and definitely NOT military looking. Get her the red one, that should be cute enough for her. :twothumbs

I found a "Nebo" single AA which is good for utility use, and paid $11.50 for one, and $10 from a different vendor. This is on-off only, maybe 20 lumens, and good for general utility only. Only problem is the castled (tactical-look) bezel, which can eat a hole in your jeans pocket. I put a water-bottle clear protector cap over it, which avoids this and doesn't destroy the beam, and can go on the tail if needs to be packed where it could click on accidentally (which cost me 2 new CR123s on my old car emergency light...)
My vote goes for one of the $10 single AA cheapies, much better in the pocket....

I just picked a few of these up at a local hardware place. Same price -$9.99. I carry a Ray-O-Vac 3w AA as my primary at work, so I bought 3, 1 for EDC, 1 as a back up for work (finally found a use for that little pocket on my duty pants ) and one in pink for the daughter.

The only mod I've done so far is to reverse the pocket clip for the EDC one. From the factory it's designed to sit bezel-up, and I wanted to be able to grab it from a ready position so a few seconds with a utility knife blade and presto - it sits bezel down, button up and ready to grab icepick style.

As far as durability the wife washed the one I had for work - found it still in the pants in the dryer :ohgeez:- too hot to touch, but fired up. Tossed it in the sink under cold water, then opened it up and looked. Battery was intact, a small drop of H2O on the battery near each end of the body (no grease on the threads) but shook everything out, put the battery back in turned it on. Noticed a little condensation on the center of the lens so I placed it bezel up and left it on overnight by the PC.

Was donning my uniform the next morning, went into the computer room and the light was still on... by now it was performing the LED equivalent of a dying man's Hail Mary, but it was still lit, with no moisture evident.

Opened it up, tossed a new battery in and droppped it in my pocket. GTG.

I've caught some flak for not having a more HSLD selection of lights, but working in the 'hood (with commensurate pay) while I'd love to run SureFires I couldn't afford to replace them if/when they get dropped in a ditch or fall out on a scene, and the Department darn sure won't pay for them.

1st post - howdy y'all. :D

Fenix E20 or E21. On - Off with momentary soft press or click. Adjustable Flood or spot. No modes. No nonsense. Works every time. The first premium brand flashlight I ever bought was an E20 and it's still working as it did day 1.

Just realized how old this thread is! He probably found something by now, or he's one thorough shopper! :sick2:
