Looking to pick up a Megalennium now that they're available again. I already have a 3x18650 WA1185 light and wanted to do something a little brighter. Should I use AW's regular 18650 cells or the IMR ones? Can I direct drive this setup, or will I need a soft start?

Well AW "regular" 18650's are protected, and the IMR ones are not. If you discharge the IMR batteries past 2.5 volts they will permanently be damaged and will loose its capacity. However the lithium ion protected cells protect against over charge/over discharge. I prefer the protected cells for this reason

I discharged four AW IMR cells to ~.8 volts witch killed them. Waste of $70.

Mainly I was interested in the effect on output and the risk of flashing the bulb. Will the IMR cells produce and a noticeable difference in output? Will I be safe with a McClicky on either set of cells or will I requre a soft start?
