Hello, everyone - long time reader here, first time poster... =)

I was just wondering if anyone else here may have had any experiences with the new Preon II (XP-G S2 Edition) yet? I ordered a black one a week ago, and received it just 2 days later (thanks 4sevens!). I am impressed with and like almost every thing about this little light (the form factor, the weight, the clickie tail, modes, etc.); however, I am a bit disappointed with the beam profile and tint of my particular XP-G S2 sample. =(

I may be in the minority here in the CPF crowd, but I personally prefer as white a beam as possible, without any warm (yellow) or other (green, purple, blue, etc.) tint. The S2 in my Preon II gives a really odd beam profile though - it has a significantly yellow hotspot, surrounded by a white ring, and then a yellow ring, and then finally a white spill! Does anyone know if this typical of the new S2 emitters?

I've contacted customer support at 4sevens regarding this, and the reply I received back from the representative (Heather) just explained to me that:

...Although they all come from the same color bin, and all are in color spec, it is impossible to guarantee that each light will look exactly the same. Tint is always subjective, what you may see as more yellow, I may not. While there is a general standard of what the color should be (color spec) everything beyond that is opinion. In other words, your pretty may be someone elses ugly, and visa versa. Because there is so much subjectivity here, we dont hand pick lights for customers. Even if I could, I would not trust that what I pick is what you prefer. That is why we guarantee the color bin and the brightness, but not the prettiness.

While I certainly understand and agree that each emitter will be different and that preferences will vary from individual to individual (for example, many on these forums prefer the warmer yellower tints), I dont think its difficult to identify a beam as being rather yellow tinted (especially when compared against other lights which are definitely just plain white). Also, the odd beam profile (with the different colored yellow and white rings) was never addressed - is this really typical of the new XP-G S2s?

I really want to like this light - in many ways, it's ideal for what I want to use it for, but I'm having a hard time looking past the (obviously) yellow tint and the multi-colored rings. I don't know if I should try to live with this sample, or return it and try for another one? Or should I try and hunt down a previous generation Preon II with an older emitter, in hopes that it has a better beam profile? Like I said, I really like the light itself, and want to get 6 for holiday gifts this year, but I'm worried about the S2 now, based on my current experience.

Does anyone else have any experiences with the Preon II's with the new XP-G S2 emitters to share - either in agreement or disagreement? Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance!! =)

I received few days ago two MiNi 123 XP-G S2 and I returned them immediately.

They are supposed to be cool white but they were very yellow/brown which is useless for me.

I asked them to send me the R5 model when the S2 will be phased out.

They told me at 4Sevens : « Please be aware that these lights were cool white. The color temperature difference you saw is normal and unavoidable for white LEDs. »

As a see today on CPF the S2 has a reputation of not beeing really cool white like the R5.

It cost me nearly 18$CAD to send back the two flashlights... A lot of money for me, these flashlights were for friends, I won't asked them to pay for the extra expense because I want them to have an impressive white light flashlight then more friends would like to buy them.

There have been MANY posts here about the S2 being bad tints. Mostly greenish-yellow from what I have read.
I think they will take back the light if you really don't like it They have good customer service at 4sevens.

That being said, I am not going to buy any of the S2 equipped lights for this reason. I would take the R5 instead. The very small difference in efficiency is not worth the gamble in tint, IMO.
There have been some lucky guys who got good S2 tints, so they aren't all bad. But the odds seem to not be too good, so I'm avoiding that emitter.

I had my RRT-0 S2 switched over to R5 at the last second for these very reasons. Luckily bugoutgear was able to change my order and send it off.

Theres a lot of complaints on the S2 emmiter. I bought a Olight M20 with S2 emmiter around 8 weeks ago and I must admit, the greenish tint leaves something to be desired. I will not buy anymore S2 lights because of this and all the complaints I've heard. I've got enough lights I can wait until we see better results. lol

Hmmm my S2 Preon II is great!
It is a little yellow tinted but I prefer that. Beam is not ringy on mine, very pretty actually.
I did get a golden yellow body and I heard those tended to have a better profile, somehow.

It's surprising that so many are dissapointed with the S2 tint. I got my 123 tactical S2 last week and I was very pleased. It's more of a yellow tint, and I find the light much more revealing vs old emitters.

My two S2s (Quark AA2 Tacrical and AA Regular) are both very green. Better than angry blue, but not the white/creamy white I prefer.

The early bins of the S2 have generally had tint issues. Cree will eventually get past this. The early Q5s had similar tint problems.
