Hello, everyone - long time reader here, first time poster... =)
I was just wondering if anyone else here may have had any experiences with the new Preon II (XP-G S2 Edition) yet? I ordered a black one a week ago, and received it just 2 days later (thanks 4sevens!). I am impressed with and like almost every thing about this little light (the form factor, the weight, the clickie tail, modes, etc.); however, I am a bit disappointed with the beam profile and tint of my particular XP-G S2 sample. =(
I may be in the minority here in the CPF crowd, but I personally prefer as white a beam as possible, without any warm (yellow) or other (green, purple, blue, etc.) tint. The S2 in my Preon II gives a really odd beam profile though - it has a significantly yellow hotspot, surrounded by a white ring, and then a yellow ring, and then finally a white spill! Does anyone know if this typical of the new S2 emitters?
I've contacted customer support at 4sevens regarding this, and the reply I received back from the representative (Heather) just explained to me that:
...Although they all come from the same color bin, and all are in color spec, it is impossible to guarantee that each light will look exactly the same. Tint is always subjective, what you may see as more yellow, I may not. While there is a general standard of what the color should be (color spec) everything beyond that is opinion. In other words, your pretty may be someone elses ugly, and visa versa. Because there is so much subjectivity here, we dont hand pick lights for customers. Even if I could, I would not trust that what I pick is what you prefer. That is why we guarantee the color bin and the brightness, but not the prettiness.
While I certainly understand and agree that each emitter will be different and that preferences will vary from individual to individual (for example, many on these forums prefer the warmer yellower tints), I dont think its difficult to identify a beam as being rather yellow tinted (especially when compared against other lights which are definitely just plain white). Also, the odd beam profile (with the different colored yellow and white rings) was never addressed - is this really typical of the new XP-G S2s?
I really want to like this light - in many ways, it's ideal for what I want to use it for, but I'm having a hard time looking past the (obviously) yellow tint and the multi-colored rings. I don't know if I should try to live with this sample, or return it and try for another one? Or should I try and hunt down a previous generation Preon II with an older emitter, in hopes that it has a better beam profile? Like I said, I really like the light itself, and want to get 6 for holiday gifts this year, but I'm worried about the S2 now, based on my current experience.
Does anyone else have any experiences with the Preon II's with the new XP-G S2 emitters to share - either in agreement or disagreement? Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance!! =)
