Princeton Tec Apex Pro fail! Please help?

I love my Princeton Tec Apex Pro headlamp, and use it just about every day. I put about four hours a week runtime on it, and I've had it since last October, so...about ten months. It's worked incredibly well, and I rely on it so much I bought another one as a backup. Good thing I did because my primary has failed.

On a late night walk this week the light wouldn't stay on. I had to hold down the on/off switch for it to light, and the LEDs were VERY dim. I stopped, put in new batteries, and same thing. I had to hold down the on/off switch for it to light, and the light was very dim.

This discouraged me to no end. We're talking about a $90 headlamp here that I've only subjected to regular use for less than a year. But after I got home I tried it again and it lit up just fine!

However the next time I turned it on during my nightly walk home from work it freakishly had the same VERY dim lights...but this time it wouldn't turn off! I had to actually unscrew the battery case and physically disconnect the batteries for it to turn off! The switches were completely unresponsive. This condition is the exact opposite of not staying turned on, except that the LEDs are the same amount dim.

And this time the headlamp has not miraculously recovered and started working again on its own. I have scoured the headlamp for any external damage but there is none. I have been using the same cr123 batteries (Nuon) that I used all winter long without problems. I admit that I tested some Li-on rechargable batteries in it for about a week during the second month I owned it. I wasn't happy with the results (low runtimes) and so returned to using regular cr123s, and everything was fine afterwards.

I'm royally bummed out. Thank goodness I have my backup because I walk one mile home from work evry night and really need my headlamp, if for nothing else other than to keep from tripping on unseen potholes. I'll tell you, once you get used to a good headlamp lighting your way it's a living hell walking home in the dark without it. I'm also somewhat embarrassed because I just recently bragged about how great this headlamp is on the "Favorite Headlamp" thread on this very forum!

Before I send it off to Princeton Tec for a post-mortem and hopefully some restitution, I thought I'd ask the brain trust here if they have any idea of what went wrong with my favorite, most used and loved light. :mecry:

And since I've never had to send a light back to the manufacturer before, or anything else for that matter, what's the best way to go about it so that I can get it repaired or replaced? Does anyone have any experience with Princeton Tec's customer service?

Call Princeton Tec - do not e-mail them! The number is 609 298 9331. I think they get a lot of spam, so they only seem to respond to e-mails half the time. In my experience, their customer service is good. My Apex cracked (my fault), and they mailed me a new one very quickly.

Thanks for the number. I'll let you know what happens. I've been using my extra one for now and BOY! are these headlamps great. I must have a backup at all times!

Glennbo - since the failure comes and goes my guess is either a cold solder
joint on one of the components on the circuit board or a broken trace
that opens and closes when the varying temperature causes the materials to
expand/contract during your walk home.

If you can get a new one do so. I might do it the hard way and open the sucker up
and use a pin and a magnifying glass to examine the circuit.

Some freeze spray and a heat gun
used carefully on different parts of the circuit board
in an effort to replicate the failure can pin point the problem area.
When the lamp is on I'd be very careful while probing.
Good luck. Apex's are a miracle tool.

Glennbo,
Send it back to Princeton Tec and Get a new light.
I did that very thing today. First I called the number vtunderground gave me. They lady was very polite and helpful. She gave me shipping instructions even a sea turtle could follow. I went to Fed-Ex, and it cost me $8 to send it off.

I will update this thread when I find out what happens.

In the meantime I've been using my duplicate back up. It's beautiful baby! Love this headlamp.

We had a power outage a few days ago and I used it to read a book. I didn't even miss not having electricity. On my nightly walk during that same power outage the entire neighborhood was pitch black, and the Apex Pro powered through the dark on wide beam magnificently!

Today I recieved a brand new Princeton Tec Apex Pro headlamp in the mail. There was no explanation as to what went wrong with the original.

Pretty quick response and I'm very pleased. :)

+1. Had this happen on an PT headlamp I had a year ago.

I have two of them, one stock and the other moded with P4.

The stock one is all beat up, the screws are broken, barely holds together but works.

The modded one with P4 is a lot brighter but not so good runtime, maybe 1-2 hours at most. Anyway that is what actually failed, the big wire leading into the unit (where the LED is) from the battery pack, is loose, I have to wiggle it all the time to get it work. It randomly goes out. I will try to fix it since I don't to exchange it for a stock one.

Had an outage recently, went through it without any HL... decided not to bother with them. Needless to say I am not so pleased.

Friends, don't let friends buy PT Apex... The concept is solid on paper but the implementation is cheap. This lite could have been a blast if made higher quality, say out of metal. Right now it just doesn't stand up to heavy duty usage for any length of time beyond 6 months.

In your case, check the wire leading to the LED, in the head. Also check that all batteries seat firmly, I had that as another cause of failure. One battery would lose if the battery pack was slightly shaken.

The PT Apex is a curious mix of beauty, functionality, and grade school
structural design mistakes.

We joke that Petzl or BlackDiamond had a spy working at PT who approved the
ridiculous hinge design on the Apex.
