PR\'s - For small lights? ***Pics*** Updated

I just finished building another light. I'll post pics later. It's late and I'm tired.

Anyway, the head is about the size of an E1e/E2e, maybe an 1/8 of an inch longer. I made it to accept an ecan/esink setup for versatility. What's a little different about this light is that I turned a PR down to fit it. I was going to go with an NX05 or Fraen, but gave in to the reflector. I'm really glad that I did. The beam is a lot tighter than a modded E?e and a bit tighter than a KL4 mod, yet it is small.

At this point I'm just debating whether to make a body to accomodate a single 123 or a Pila 150S. Maybe I'll make a spacer and do both, or just make two bodies, or maybe just use it on an E1e body. Decisions, decisions.

Back to the point. I've played with a lot of reflectors and I've found the PR's to be the easiest to work with. They are easy to fit and put out a rather nice beam, even when small. I'm just wondering how small it is that you can go.

I truly hope that the PR's continue to be available.

Has anyone out there gotten really small with the PR? If so, what were the results.

Re: PR\'s - For small lights?

It'd be nice to get one so small that you could put in a Firefly to get longer throw. Somehow I think it would be too short to give any decent throw.

Re: PR\'s - For small lights?

very nice!

i've given thought to modding one, but could never bring myself to cut down a perfectly good reflector.

thanks for taking the risk for me! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: PR\'s - For small lights?

Roth,

Do it. I took the plunge and got a bunch of them, just to see what I could do with them. They are very easy to work with and are much more LED friendly that most of the Carley reflectors. I've gotten pretty small with one and still wound up with a good medium range light.

Re: PR\'s - For small lights?

Chop, can you get one small enough to fit in the regular McLux head? Id be very interested in one if you can.

Re: PR\'s - For small lights?

well i've done a little bit of modifying to fit in variuos projects, but nothing that actually altered the reflective part.
i've turned down the diameter a bit to fit in smaller projects, and i've machined the back at an angle to more easily avert from grounding the led out.

i may eventually order some more for testing purpose /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: PR\'s - For small lights?

kakster,

I've never even seen a regular McLux, but I'll say this. The light that the PR is in now was made with the intention of supporting an optic. I suppose I'd need to see the McLux to be able to tell.

Re: PR\'s - For small lights?

OK guys, I took some shots. I hope they came out OK. I've noticed in the past that pics that looked fine on my laptop were unviewable on my wife's desktop.

Well, here goes...

The first pic is of the latest light, with an E1e on the left, the latest light in the middle, and a modded L4 on the right.

Again, the latest in the middle.

And some close ups of the new light.

Some specs. This light actually supports the ecan/esink pills. Right now it has a BadBoy700 running a TWOK 3W emitter. The reflector is what's left of a Pelican reflector. The body was built to accomodate a Pila 150S cell and it gets about an hour of runtime. The head also looks and runs well on an E1e body and E2e body. Of course, using the E2e body, you are limited to using the Pila 168S or similar batt as 2X123's will fry the pill.

For some beam shots...(excuse the mess, the grandmother in law is visiting).

The first shot is of the new light on the left and the modded L4 running a Q3J at about 1A. This was quite surprising to me because the Q3J in the L4 is special. It's the brightest KL4 mod I've done, including those using 3W's. This has been my baby. Anyway, the "mini" PR has a tighter beam and much better throw than the modded KL4 does. The picture, as I see it on my laptop, is a fair representation of the KL4's beam. The hotspot starts to get fuzzy on the edges. The "mini" PR's beam is clean and crisp with very good sidespill.

The next pic is of the same pill that was in the new light, only this time it's in a modded E1e. The E1e is on the left and the modded KL4 is on the right.

As you can see (I hope you can see it), the "mini" PR runs circles around the E1e's bored out reflector. I really like the versatility of the esink/ecan setup. It's not hard to accomodate and I haven't had any problems with getting the heat out.

So, what do you guys think? The PR is truly a wonderful reflector to work with. I have some mini m@gs coming in and am going to see how that turns out. Get it? "Turns out." /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I took a mini m@g head and bored it out, then rethreaded it to 13/16-20. I was surprised at how much meat there was the mini m@g. This might make a cool mod to be run on an E1e body that almost anyone could do. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Cool Chop! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Re: PR\'s - For small lights?

Nice work, Chop. I would be pretty sexy to make a reflector that could drop in, in the space of an NX05 as somebody suggested earlier (standard McLux head). You make it, and I'm buyin' it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: PR\'s - For small lights?

Darell,

That has crossed my mind, but I don't have a KL1 or McLux head to mess with. Besides, when you get into that small of a size, we already have the mini m@g reflectors.

Anyway, the next time I get a KL1 in for modding, I'll look into it.

Re: PR\'s - For small lights?

Chop,

Very nice.
That worked out really well.

I really have to say, you are doing an excellent job on these lights, every time I turn around, you have another complete custom light! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I see you used a SF E series bezel there? Nice idea.
I want to start work on a couple custom lights soon, and the thing that has me worried, is making the bezels.
Have to be so perfect. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

Keep up the great work. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Re: PR\'s - For small lights?

Chop, You have a nice workshop, like Darell said, to achieve this wonderfull light /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowlaugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif

Without joke, it's a terrific creation, I shall like knowing how to make the same thing /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Re: PR\'s - For small lights?

jtice,

I may be doing it wrong, but I build my lights from the inside out. You really don't need to be all that perfect. I first ream, cut to length, and thread both the body and head. I screw 'em together and turn them as one piece between centers.

That probably over simiplifing the process, but you get the idea. As far as the bezel ring goes, making them isn't hard. I just happened to have this laying around. The mini m@g bezel rings are also handy and are cheap.

BTW, didn't you want to get some parts from me? If it's what I think it is, you need to PM me.

Re: PR\'s - For small lights?

Got some dimensions on the size of the cut down PR? Did you turn it down and shorten it? Great idea, Tony!

Re: PR\'s - For small lights?

Very nice light Chop /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif Are you going to make these for sale? I would like one that would work with a 1x123.As balrob asked,I was wondering if a pr would work good in a Friefly.

Re: PR\'s - For small lights?

Awesome. May I suggest in the future you make run of a custom light. One of the members here that does anodizing could do it NA HAIII. Perhaps a 1AA super compact light with NX05/fraen and a kroll? No one else has and I'm sure it would be a hit. Or at least make one so I can drool over it... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Re: PR\'s - For small lights?

Tony,

I think it may be worthwile to investigate getting this reflector down to a NX-05 size. Even though we already have minimag reflectors, I have a feeling the PR would outperform it when using HD emitters. If this could drop into minimags, McLux heads, and KL1s, I'd buy more than a few of them.
