I have some Q4Hs from Wayne and they're more like bin 5. Not blue, very purplish, too much for me. I was thinking on trying some of the Q3s he had. I've had all good experiences with Q3Js. The color tint is very white with the occasional slight blue tint. But these are HDs and the Q3s in question are LDs. Has anyone tried these Q3LDs from the Shoppe? I heard that even they have a slight purple tint as well sometimes. True? Then again I haven't seen LDs that are ture white in color, only HDs. Maybe I'll try a warm white?
Any feedback would be very helpful. Thx.

I bought a madmax+ with q3 last week. It works as advertised but has a strong teal tint to it. It's not bad enough to send back, but it is bad enough that I'm leary of buying again.

I do have a tek torch with a luxeon that is very white, so I know they are available :-)

Thanx GL for the info on your lux color tint.

Anyone one else have some experiences with these?
I'd really like to know. (Free bump) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/popcorn.gif

I have a Q3 and a Q2 low dome - both are blessed with a 'Morgue Purple' tint. Not too severe, but clearly visible. I also have a LIII S bin high dome. It is a lovely snow white; I really can't discern any tint one way or the the other. I'm sticking with HD from now on.

Do you get any green output from the Q3 or as much green as the Q2? Also does one or the other put out more purple than the other?

Well I guess what I'm trying to ask is if you got the Q2 and Q3 mixed up and have never seen their color tint outputs previously, do you think you would be able to tell which is which when seen for the first time?

I appreciate the help. thx

I might be able to help here.

The beam of the Low dome and NX05 generate a mixed rings of color and brightness. The center beam is usually whitish to whitish purplish. From there going outward there are more rings of various colors. The outter bands are typically yellowish to greenish even tho the center could be nice and white.

The old bin codes vary dramatically from unit to unit and I've seen some Q2s look batter than some of the Q3s and vice versa. The Luxeon lottery is in effect on the older bin codes. Less so with the new testing they are using on the Lux3s.

That's not to say that a Q2 or Q3 module isn't useful. I still consider them very good considering the state of LED technology today as it stands. Comparing any module against the original bulb, there is no comparison. The modules (IMHO) are way better.

I was going to edit my response to darkzero and mention a funny characteristic that has been bothering me - when I put the MiniMag in 'candlestick' mode (bare emitter, no optics), the coloration of the Q2 & Q3 seem to disappear. They both become a clean, but 'cool' white. It did seem to me that the optics were adding/affecting the color, but I thought that wasn't possible. I guess it is.

That is the problem with the LEDs. When people ask for a nice white one I get a different beam and color for the following combinations.

Bare emitter 3-5" away from white paper.

Bare emitter 12" away from white paper.

Emitter + NX05 combination against a blank wall. 6"

Emitter + NX05 combination against a blank wall. 4 ft.

Outdoors in practical usage, this is usually not a problem since most usages the area being illuminated is not flat and is 3 dimenensional in nature. When illuminating non flat surfaces like around the house, taking a walk outdoors, the primary center beam is what is used by the eye the most and this is in general white or close to white with the NX05.

A frosted reflector or something similar generates the best uniform beam. This is a flood beam and not a throw. Next best combination is a good parabolic type reflector with stipples in it.
