Q5 circuit board?

Hello!:wave:

My first attempt to mod a flaslight. I bought this one and im thinking of replacing its led with this Q5







so i need help choosing right circuit board. i would like to use 2xCR123 primaries and have multiple modes available. And it would be nice to get the maximum output from the led. Can you help me decide what would be the best choice?

Before you think about the circuit board you might wanna think about how the cree will be with that reflector. If it s luxeon thats there already you might be better going for an SSC P4.

Just a thought.

sku.10421 and sku.7425 are the only ones you linked to that will work.

Most of the other boards will work if you consider 18650 as a power source (better than 2xCR123 in many aspects)

Also, you want to use an SSC P4 instead of a Cree Q5 for this mod. DX has them both.

Can these two circuit boards give max output if used with 2xCR123 or should i just go with the 18650?:thinking:

The SSC P4 has an emitting pattern very similar to the Luxeon I and III LEDs so the beam pattern would be similar(IIRC the SSC P4 should give a smoother beam). The Cree XR-E, because of the metal ring around the die, will leave a ring type artifact around the hotspot.

If you want to use a 18650 battery you first have to make sure that you light can fit an 18650 battery.

You power your light with 2 CR123 batteries right? Then it already has a circuit to lower the battery voltage to a more resonable level for the LED(to around 3.5-3.7v). A swap of just the LED should work. You won't need a new driver unless you want to add/change the modes.

The SSC P4 is better for this because it is physically much more similar to the Luxeon that was in there than a Cree is.

The boards with AMC7135 chips will achieve full brightness from 18650.

That KD1695 board is virtually identical to the DX7612

I really like this board. It's physically the same as the KD1695 and DX7612 but only has high mode and low mode. None of those other useless strobe modes.
 
Just swap the emitter board with sku 1445 from DX.

This will be an easy swap and will improve your light by nearly %50 without messing with the driver. Then, if you're not satisfied- swap the driver later.
THis is the U bin seoul Led. Excellent choice. THey are actually brighter than most of the cree led's.
 
Monkeyboab, LukeA and Gunner12 are right about the reflector. I started with your idea and the same flashlight a year ago and received the same advice about the reflector not being the optimum with the Cree.

Since then, I have put an SSC P4 in it, the DX SKU 1445 Lighthouse one mentions, and it is a much better light than the original. I also ended up using the DX 7612 board and use it in the low-medium-high group. The 7612 board seems to work OK with two CR123 (6.0V).
