I am looking at getting one of these quad die leds (expert in the house!) for camping. I am not a huge fan of anything other than AA’s or rcr123’s and most defiantly not cr123 (cost) but its nice to have them as an option.

What are the pros and cons of the cree or the ssc? Ideally I want lots of throw with good side spill but not just side spill.

Its looking like the new fenix is the only candidate. Is there anything else out there? Drop in for a 2d mag say with 6-8 AA’s?

Plus I don’t want anything thin and long! Short and fat is best! (no double entendre intended!!!)
 
From everything that I've read so far, it seems to me that neoseikan's LegionII is an outstanding candidate in terms of output, throw, innovation & regulation.

You would have to invest in 3 18650s and a charger but they won't set you back much and you'd then have guilt-free lumens.

Its certainly short and fat too. :)

Its output has been measured independently at 742 (out the front) lumens which is maintained for over 2 hours on the highest level
without wavering and without undue heat concerns.

That will be pretty hard to beat.
 
Lot's of throw from an MC-E or P7 will be hard to find.

There are many new high power lights coming out, and price will be your main decision.

Short and fat in my mind would be the new Legion II or the EagleTac M2, however, they have great side spill but only moderate throw.

A quad die designed for throw would be the new upcoming Sunlite 16w Far Projection. It will have a recharge port in the flashlight body...however, it is long.

The Fenix TK40 may be a combination between everything. (sidespill, moderate throw, fat, somewhat short, runs on AA's)

Lot's of good things coming out right now....might want to wait until some reviews hit the forum.

It depends what your definition of moderate throw is.

According to MrGman who did all the beam shots with the LegionII and the Solarforce900 etc., the LegionII can out-throw the Solarforce900
and also provide far more spill at the same time.

The Solarforce900 throws 16,500 lux at 1 meter. The Solarforce 950M throws 18,500 lux at 1 meter.

So, since the LegionII out-throws them, it would put the lux in the region of 20,000 at 1 meter at least.

To my mind this is more than moderate throw. Its pretty good throw.

How much runtime?

As for the Cree MC-E Vs Seoul P7, Seoul P7 has a larger foot print. Cree MC-E have individually addressable dies. Both have similar output within comparable flux bins.
 
for camping?

Then get my very general con regarding quad dies:
they eat too much current!

in a camping environment a single die 18650 (short and fat) lamp already kicks *** and is small enough to be with You any time.
 
For camping? Get a headlamp. I suggest a zebralight of your preferred battery configuration.

Once you've found your camp site and checked the neighborhood to be free of bears and Swedish backpackers your good thrower can rest for a while. A headlamp is the most useful item for camp chores. When everything is set you can use your "WOW" thrower to impress your friends, go deer spotting or SAR missions.
