Question about battery's

As a new person here, can someone guide me to a site that shows the differences in the 'A's and the 18650 and envelops and the like?
 
18650 = battery size. usually Li-Ion. It's like a AA size at +30% scale.
RCR123 / 16340 = battery size, Lithium primary or li-ion. NEVER EVER recharge a lithium primary.
AA = battery size. Usually alkaleak (Leaky alkaline), NiMH, NiCd, or a few others. Buy Eneloops.
AAA = battery size. Same as AA, but smaller and weaker.




Li-Ion: Very powerful, higher voltage than most chemistries. An 18650 can have triple the energy of a AA cell.
Lithium primary: Long shelf life, best in cold. Do not recharge.
NiMH: Reliable everyday battery. Buy eneloops.
NiCd: Older, less-reliable everyday battery. Good for some specialty applications.
Alkaleak: Leaky alkaline. Several related chemistries with poor high-power handling. They leak, don't use them. Buy Eneloops.

I can't find one but the numbers like 18650 break down like this, 18mm/65.0mm which correspond with width/height of the battery.

I just got my caliper out. AA size = 14mm X 50.3mm and AAA = 10.3mm X 44.3mm

So what application would a 18650 be used? Is there lights that use this only?
 
18650 = rigid pack of high capacity. Many laptops use them. The cells are used in high-power flashlights because they can easily deliver 10W each.

18650s are unlikely to fit in most AA applications. You'd need an appropriate physical and electronic adapter. Roughly speaking, something that runs on 3-4 AAs "might" run on an 18650, but it also might catch on fire. The 18650 won't fit in any AA holder without extensive modification.

An 18650 is wider than a CR123 (aka 16340, 16mm diameter, 34mm length), with lower voltage than two of them. It IS almost exactly twice the length of a 16340.
 
So, how would you use a 18650 in a AA application, and would I use one instead of 2 123's?

3 AA or AAA might usual be replaced with a 18650 or 18500 (Not all light can handle the extra power).
Two CR123 are nearly the same length as a unprotected 18650, but has a smaller diameter (16650 or 17650 might fit, if the space is tight), the lower voltage of the LiIon will work in many lights. Lights designed for 18650 and 2xCR123 usual has the extra length and diameter for protected 18650.
