could be several reasons for it (def a diode)
1. to prevent feedback voltage to the vehicle computer?
2. security system/funky switch the switches polarity when the trunk lid closes?
3. my best guess is a voltage regulator, as when the car is running the bulb would receive 14+ volts and when off perhaps only 12 or 11.5ish. The car manufacturer always uses the cheapest lights, so the original was probably rated for about 12volts, which means if you open your trunk with the car running more than a few times a month you should buy these bulbs in bulk. I haven't ever seen a diode used in this manner, but I guess its cheaper than a driver (although a series resistor seems like it might be equally effective and cheaper)
none can fathom the mind of a vehicle engineer, because if you could you would immediately turn inside out...nothing they do makes sense...like welding nuts inside frame rails so when you attempt to remove your broken suspension the welds break and you have to chop your frame apart to get that last bolt out of the lower control arm..../end rant against acura:shakehead
