Yes. That slot performs a function when located at the front of the light [holds circuit board]. By cutting slots in both ends, they don't have to maintain end to end orientation in subsequent steps. This in a consideration when you automate production activities.

Doug: Thanks for the answer. That makes sense now. Does the head unscrew, or is it permanently attached?

When I first got mine I was wondering the same thing until I saw the photo with the front off.

It unscrews, but it's VERY tight.
