I have just aquired an old SL 20x from a customer of mine and I have a few questions about it. I think the light dates from around 2000 or so because the battery in it is was dated 03/2000 with a a peice of tape and pen. It did come with a 12v truck charger so i charged it up for a couple of hours and it has been working great, i have been getting about 15-20 min of runtime out of this old battery. I REALLY like this light it is very bright and the trow is outstanding! I am now wanting a new battery for longer run times, what kind/type should i buy? Also I was wondering if I put a glass lense in it will it imrove the beam any? And finally how long should I be charging this light and should I run it until it goes dead before charging? Can I leave on the charger over night in the truck?

I have the SL35X and it has a glass lens and I think that the SL20X does too, though not sure. You can google "Streamlight SL20X battery packs", and get some results, or try "Streamlight SL20X generic battery packs" for better prices and some packs that will be made up of NiMh cells for bettery runtime, instead of the stock NiCd cells. The stock SL20X battery pack is made up of five NiCd cells. The SL20X lamp assemblies (LA) features a very strong quartz halogen bulb which is warrantied for 6 months, if purchased from a reputable SL dealer, and remember that SL stands behind their products and will repair their flashlights free of charge if taken to a
SL warranty/store. My area (northern CA) has a warranty store in Sacramento, and Santa Rosa, and I have personally taken advantage of their services over the years. Walk in walk out service.

Just got to thinking, I may have replaced my SL35X lens (window) with a pyrex lens (boron silicate) from flashlightlens.com

BullseyeBill is right on, as usual. The Nimh battery is a big improvement over the stock Nicad.

I have a dimming tailcap. It has a variable resistor that allows the user to dim the light to their liking by holding the button down. The dimmer resets when the light is turned off, so the light turns on with full power. Another cool mod is to replace the stock lamp assembly with one for the SL-35. It's much brighter (I don't recal exactly how much brighter, off hand).

Good luck! The SL-20 is a great light, if dated.
