Question Regarding LED Radio Screen

I am replacing all of the orange LEDs in my car radio screen with white LEDs. I have this down but I do not know how to approach eliminating the orange from the screen.

Is the coloring on the screen simply a film I need to remove or do I need to purchase a new screen? If I need to purchase a new screen, what are these called? I haven't had any luck finding them anywhere.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Do you mean the top chunk there which looks to me more like an LCD screen than any kind of LED?

Most of the time, the color on the LCD is from either edge lit, or back lit LEDs. There are some instances where a color film will be used, but typically only for negative image displays. It doesn't appear that your LCD has a colored film in it. Changing the LEDs in it will be a real challenge.

Evilc66,

Thank you for your reply, any knowledge regarding LCD's is helpful to me because I have none. The only reason I am thinking there must be a film is because, as you can see in the picture, even when there LED's are not on there is a very apparent orange tint to the screen.

I have been replacing 0603 and 0805 SMD's during this project and I can't imagine the screen being that much more difficult. The main difficulty factor is knowing what to expect and being prepared. As it is I have no clue how this screen is lit and would much rather ask around before I just desoldier it and end up without a radio for a few weeks.

I am fairly certain that the screen is not lit from the edge because of it's orange tint while powered off but I'm not sure what else to expect. Do these typically have SMD's behind them or do they have their own internal lighting?

Thank you for any help you can offer.

The color from an LCD comes from the liquid crystal panel itself. The brigtness is given from the backlighting which should already be white. I'm pretty sure you are boned, dude.

Although I hate using wikipedia for a reference, I think you should skim over their page on LCD (or google it) to get the gist of how one works.

I'm interested to see how this works out, so keep us posted. This is beyond the kinds of things I do.

I do know a guy that changes the led's on atv lcd displays. This must be similar. He'll change it to any color you want, as long as it's blue, green, orange, amber, red, or white.
